Yaradua, Goodluck Jonathan and the Future of Nigeria.
Goodluck Jonathan was the acting president of Nigeria until 9.00pm yesterday when providence decided that what the politicians couldn't do will best be settled the best way so as to ensure that peace and love reigns supreme in Nigeria.
Like Abacha, the despot who ruled Nigeria until death took from him what he refused to relinquish willingly, Yar'adua has proven to the world that Nigerians do not see power as a privilege, rather they see it as a right which they must hold on to until death comes. I dont blame thwm, our culture as Africans does not augur well with the White man's idea of government called Democracy. In Yoruba land for example, unless a king dies another cannot reign and only death through suicide which can be invoked by the chiefs could make a king leave his throne until he is of a ripe old age.
Many knew death for Yaradua is inevitable, many Nigerians like my neighbour told me this morning were looking forward to the announcement, but many others wanted to keep the incapacitated president alive so as to ensure that their own wills and manipulations will come to pass over this great nation.
Wole Soyinka the nobel laurette who labelled Goodluck Jonathan a Gentleman will now realise that it is better for a man to be gentle and wise than to throw caution to the wind. Imagine Jonathan agigating for the presidency and the conspiracy it would have spawned now that Yaradua is dead. The wisdom in his gentlemanly conduct is that he will now have a country to lead where animosity and acrimony will be less because he veiled his ambition and bide his time.
Now the dead is gone, to be buried in a closed casket and the Living is sworn in as president. Now is the time to give Nigerians something other than news and rumours as dividends of democracy. Now is the time for the nation to have goodluck.
Now is the time for electoral reforms, a time for job creation, a time for poverty eradication, a time for progress and development all over the nation. Coruption must as a matter of necessity come to an end, responsive governance must be the order of the day, We must have a nation worth dying for....
Now is the time to block the path of the leeches like IBB, Atiku, OBj and other strongholds that are holding the destiny of this nation in their hands....
Goodluck Jonathan became president without the backing of a particular cabal or group, he owes nobody the key to his office and can only limit himself if in the process of trying to contest for the post next year he sacrifice us all on the altar of his personal ambition.
God help our new leader to see the fact that When you enthrone a man, it is for your own good pleasure and will and the man needs not boast or believe that he has achieved anything of importance.
I look now at Nigeria's future and i ask....
Will we ever have a tomorrow?
Will we ever have a future?
Will there ever be a NIgeria worth living for?
