Writing To Prisoners On Death Row?

I recently read an article about a young woman who has been writing to prisoners who are on death row in maxim security jails since she was 17 years old. I didn’t know what to think of it as first and I’m not sure whether I agree or disagree with her decision to do it, but I do find it unsettling. These criminals could be telling her anything. How can she tell the truth from the lies?

The woman admits she happily writes to murderers and rapists. She tells these men personal things about herself such as her how she spends her day and what she is studying at college, she has even sent them photos of herself.

She claims she doesn’t love any of these men but says she finds it comforting to know she’s giving these men a connection to the outside world. Currently she writing up to 34 men at a time. She defends her decision by saying everyone deserves a friend even murderers.

PersonalIy wouldn’t choose to write to a criminal that had murdered or raped anyone it just wouldn’t sit right with me and I hope this woman doesn’t get too caught up with this hobby. If I chose to write to a stranger I would write to the terminally ill as I feel they deserve people’s support more. These criminals chose to commit a crime, nobody choses to be terminally ill.
