You can write your family story. Don’t procrastinate. Procrastination is your worst enemy. Make quiet times to talk with all your older relatives especially. Collect family history, funny stories, pictures and everything you can to present your family as it is seen by you and your relatives. Put your best foot forward and get it all on paper. You will have a precious gift to pass down to the future generations.

Many people think about writing their family story but procrastination sets in. If you really do want to write your story, do it now. When you wait for the right time, stories get lost, people forget and it’s gone forever. A personal account of your family can be enjoyed for generations to come. From your children on down to your greats several times removed. A family history is priceless. There are many ways you can put together your family history. Get stories from all family members from old to young. Older members can recount many interesting family happenings. Get your photos and family episodes from as many generations as possible.

You can’t sit down in front of TV and ferret out interesting family information. Make a time to sit down with family members quietly and let them talk. Take notes because you will forget many details unless recorded. Use prompters like your memories, stories you’ve been told,family photos, favorite family songs, recipes and the like to spark reminiscences. Great grandparents and great aunts and uncles are founts of information. Make time to listen to all their memories and any funny stories are a plus. Tell the story of as many generations as possible. Include letters, deeds, marriage licenses, birth certificates, and so on if you have access to them. Collect pictures of family members of all generations.

Now you have your stories and pictures. It’s time to sit down and write. You can start with the oldest generation, or youngest and look back on generations past. It’s your choice, and don’t worry about it being best seller. You are writing the history of your family for the family. If others want to read it, so be it. But that’s not your concern. Your family history will be appreciated and passed down to the future generations. What could be better than that?
