Will Science eventually exterminate Humans?
“I almost think it is the ultimate destiny of Science to exterminate the human race.” Thomas Love Peacock.
An English satirist and author of the 19th century had the intuition to utter such a statement, which is nothing short of being an exaggeration. It’s a never-ending debate about science being worth it or not. Moreover, the opposite of science has always been religion; science playing God and religion being the cautious one. Yes, science has earned its credit over and over but, it has also unearned it in much bigger and destructive ways. The reason for this statement is that, science has always ruled our lives in every possible way; especially after the Industrial Revolution. An author was right when he stated:
“With science having an authoritative voice in society, any counter moral and religious arguments on our behalf lose footing. We like to believe that the field of science is objective and value-free of human biases and bigotries. However, scientists are human beings who analyze and interpret their datum from their subjective and often times politically-motivated viewpoints.”
If anything good has come out of science, it has eventually shown its true evil face to, at the least, the next coming generation. Hence, the unfortunate truth is that the results surface, long after its creators are dead. What this generation has in their hands is the worst of all; and it is expected to get worse still.
All of the reasons responsible for the end of earth eventually lead us back to science. Whether it’s nuclear war, biological warfare, the greenhouse effect, degradation of the ozone layer, pollution or disease; all of it is related to science. The list doesn’t end here. The man-made disasters, more commonly known as modern technology, such as genetic engineering, nanotechnology, modern agricultural practices, computers or even an all-destroying phase transition; are equally responsible. The risks associated with each and every cause are so enormous, that it may seem as a miracle that humans are, at all alive today.
The concept, referred to as ‘inalienable rights’ such as the tight to have as much children as they want, is arguable; even if it may be the end of the world. But since atheism has been finally proved to have no basis, it will be highly unlikely to accept each and everything scientists utter. The experiments being carried out by the physicists and scientists may even cause uncontrollable phenomenon. They have already claimed to have created the temperature that existed microseconds after the birth of the universe. Although, what good that will do is well beyond our imagination.
The question remains that remains is how far humans should tamper with themselves in order to achieve immortality. It should be clear to us that, any further improvement in our lives will eventually lead to more devastation. The end of the world may seem close enough but it has to come anyway. Do we try to prevent it which will be useless anyhow, or do we go on as we are; believing that it has to come anyway?
