Even otherwise healthy people get headaches. So far no single reason has been found for headaches. Different people have different triggers. For some it’s tension, for others it’s particular foods, additives or chemicals. There are specific foods and additives to avoid, and there are very restrictive diets. Most people who are plagued by headaches will try anything to get relief.
Where do headaches come from? There is no easy answer. No one factor can be singled out. Some of the reasons for headaches are: medications, hormonal factors, lack of sleep, tension, allergies, chewing gum and certain foods. Headaches are all too common and can make a normal life impossible. Doctors hear complaints from patients that certain foods bring on a headache. As a result researchers are beginning to examine the equation more seriously.
Unsuspected triggers can be such an unlikely substance as salt. Why this is so is not known, but doctors have found that patients often have a headache after eating salty food. Cutting down on salt is recommended for fewer headaches. Ice cream can be another trigger. The cold temperature of ice cream activates nerves in the roof of the mouth which sends a message to the brain that sets off the pain alarm. Chewing gum overworks the muscles of the jaw, the pain that goes with this kind of headache is usually at the front and sides of the head.
Food additives are also suspect. Researchers found that when headache sufferers followed a diet with no additives, almost all found relief, and those who did get a headache said it wasn’t as severe. A diet eliminating food coloring, monosodium glutamate yeasts and nitrates is recommended for relief. Some will say this type of diet is too hard to follow but for the patients who are plagued with headaches, it’s really worth trying.
The following foods have the potential to cause headaches, avoiding them could be to your advantage.
Cheese, chocolate, red wine, coffee and other sources of caffeine, alcohol, tea, eggs, wheat, tomato, rye, benzoic acid, tartrazine oranges, cured food, such as hot dogs, salami, bacon, smoked fish and cold cuts or anything containing MSG. pork, yogurt or pork.
Hopefully this diet will work for your headaches, but it not, there is more than one diet that you can try. Trouble makers will vary from one patient to another. One very constrictive diet is eating only one fruit, either banana or apple. One carb, either potato or rice. One cabbage family vegetable. One meat, either lamb or chicken. Of the hundred people who tried this diet, fully 88% found relief. Some headaches stopped immediately, others within a three week period.
