A spelunker is a person who explores caves. Most spelunkers are amateurs who explore caves as a hobby. They usually belong to local clubs, and have often been credited with the discovery of new cave or new passage in an older one.

Every year thousands of people become first- time spelunkers as they tour either Carlsbad spelunkers as they tour either National Parks. Caves can be found throughout the Midwestern United States and generally wherever the bedrock is composed of limestone.

Cave exploration can be dangerous. Every year hundreds of people become lost in caves. Sometimes these experiences can be fatal. One should never enter an unexplored cave without an experienced guide, and only after taking proper precautions to prevent getting lost.
