What should you do with unwanted items? There is almost always someone who will take your unwanted items and make good use of them. Rather than filling up the landfills, it’s much better to have those items continue to be useful for others. Next time you think of throwing something away. Take time to check and see if someone else would be happy to have it.

If you have unwanted furniture to sell, try craigslist.com or ebay. Make a photo and post it with your ad. Its more likely to sell if the piece can be seen. If it doesn’t sell the Salvation Army and Goodwill make pickups. They also provide receipts for tax purposes. There are sites where you can give or get stuff free, or you can place it on the curb with a “free” sign on it.

Donate your cell phones to Wefare offices. Before donating erase all identifying information, including your phone book, text messages and calls you’ve made and received. To find out how look at the manufactures instructions.

Never dump used motor oil on the ground or down the drain. Pour it in a clean container with a lid. Walmart lub and some other centers accept used motor oil. You will also find a recycle site near you.

If you have left over building supplies donate it to Habitat for Humanity Restores. Goodwill and Salvation Army accepts sheets, pillow cases, towels and curtains and much more, or call your local animal shelters. They can use them for clean up and pet bedding.

If your child has outgrown his stuffed toys donate them to service units in Iraq and Afghanistan. They will distribute them to needy children in war zones, refugee camps, orphanages and hospitals. You pay the postage. Animal shelters also take them for puppies to snuggle.

If you buy a new mattress, some retailers dismantle and recycle otherwise it goes to the dump. If yours is still in good shape you can donate it to a homeless shelter, thrift store or Salvation Army.

For old bicycles take them to thrift stores or Salvation Army, or to places that restore bikes and send them to other countries.
