What do children watch mostly on the television? Cartoon movies, without any doubt. Children like to watch cartoon movies on the TV even before they start to speak. Do you know why? I think it is because of the funny and weird figures of animals and humans that appear in cartoons. Not only that, but the bright and varied colors the cartoon characters are painted with also play an important role in attracting children. But is it good for children to watch cartoons on the TV?

I remember reading an interview with a young man who ranked high in the Civil Services examinations sometime before. He told the interviewer that he was very fond of watching cartoon movies on the TV when he was a child. It was the cartoon movies that helped him in a big way in learning English, especially spoken English. And even as a grownup he liked to watch cartoon movies occasionally.

Nowadays children watch TV more and read books less. When we were children, there was no TV and so watching TV was out of the question. So we read books more compared to our children. The main argument against watching the TV is that it leaves nothing for the child to imagine. He can see the different characters before him. He need not imagine the appearance of a character or any situation in the movie. But when reading a book he has to imagine how the different characters will look like. He has to imagine a place or a situation described in the story he is reading. So the imaginative power of the child increases by reading books.

Very small children may not be able to read lengthy stories or books. But they will be happy to watch the TV, especially cartoon movies. Watching cartoons will improve their language. As most of the cartoons are in English, watching them will improve their English. They will learn to understand from the conversation between others. Their vocabulary will improve. They will learn how to pronounce different words. Their spoken English will greatly improve. These are definitely advantages of watching cartoons.

But there should be a limit to everything. The time period for which children watch TV should be properly regulated by parents. There should be time allotted for reading books. You cannot prevent children from watching TV entirely. It will only do more harm than good. A balance should be arrived at between watching TV, reading books, studying etc.

By the by, do you like to watch cartoon movies? To be frank, I do. I love to watch ‘Tom and Jerry’ or ‘Mr. Bean’ with my children occasionally. It is big entertainment, don’t you think so?

I grow up watching Votes V, Diamos and those other Japanese robots. And I never went astray. I think its still on the hands of the parent how we raise our kids.

Thank you Joel for the visit and your valuable opinion.

There are a few cartoons out there that shouldn't be out there for kids. I watch what my kids watch to make sure it is OK. That is what parents should be doing as well. It is not the child's decision on what they are going to watch. It's up to the parent to moderate what they watch.

Keeping a watch on them is always good.

Tom and Jerry and Mr. Bean are both filled with flava. And so is the contrast of good and bad about cartoons you point out in this article. Good job!

Everything in this world has two sides-good and bad. It is for us to have an an overall control.

I can talk about this in detail because my son watched these crazy cartoons and used to have nightmares when little, so we stopped that channel and I also hard that some anime type cartoons,( I cannot understand what it is all about) were banned by the Japanese govt. because they affected the behavior of children. it is true that some cartoons relieve stress but new age cartoons are not so child friendly. thankfully my son has stopped watching it except for he occasional pokemon or doraemon.

Thank you Deepa, for expressing your valuable opinion.

Watching cartoons sitting close to the TV should be avoided as it can cause vision problems in the future. The type of cartoons that the children watch should also be taken care of. Tom and Jerry is a famous cartoon but it has got a lot of violence in it. The vision of a cat getting crushed can cause problems to the children if it were not in a cartoon. Cartoons can be of great use in improving Spoken English and it can be of great use in improving the thoughts. I remember how much I enjoyed watching the cartoon Pokemon. Thanks for helping me to call my memories back.

I think that children can, from a very young age, tell the difference between real world scary violence and the humorous violence in cartoons. I don't think cartoon violence is a problem in the same way as more realistic portrayals of violence would be.

Thank you Bruce for your comment. I also share your opinion.

Thank you Ranapratap, for the visit and comment. Your comment is much appreciated.

Watching cartoon is good to both the mental and social health for the children. But some dangerous activities of some cartoon characters can cause life risk to children if they try to perform themselves like those cartoon character. So, watching cartoons has both pros and cons to children.
