The Use Of Young Coconut Leaves

As you may know that young coconut leaf can be used as ornamental materials. Young coconut leaves have so far been used mainly for cooked rice wrappers. The leaves are formed so that raw rice can be put inside it and ready to be cooked. When the rice is cooked, you can serve it with saucy meat or chicken. Young coconut leaves are also used as decorations. The leaves can be formed to be like a bunch of flower and it is used in wedding receptions.

Coconut trees probably grow in other countries but I have never heard of the use of young coconut leaves there. Today, I watched a special program on the use of young coconut as materials for decorations. The decorating technique has been developed by a student who studies in London. She has held an exhibition of her creation, which was attended by many invitees.

In Indonesia, young coconut leaves are still considered to be something of low value. Those who use decorations of young coconut leaves are people living in villages. I have never seen young coconut leaf decorations used by people who claim to be well-off people.

I hope the exhibition recently held in London will open the rich people’s mind that using young coconut leaves have nothing to do with social status. It is a work of art that is worth appreciating. We thank the student who has introduced decorations made of young coconut leaves to the world.
