Or more lip of mouth and well meaning words. What do you think?
I read that on this month a new UN conference has opened in the most tourist city in Brazil, that is, Rio de Janerio. Members of governments and different organizations have joined in to participate in another well meaning UN Conference to save the Earth.
As I read, there are loads of topics to tackle, but very few deals and compromise. As usual.
The scientific experts warn us that that either we stop crazy, mass consume and tackle a serious birth control all over the world, or future generations will be in serious trouble as world population haven’t stopped growing to become unsustainable and the same with the environment.
We may be as good as we wish to be, implementing the three famous R’s, but this is like a drop of water in the Oceans.
We may try not to shop for unnecessarily wrapped items.
We may shop for local produce rather than the one that comes from distant lands.
We may carefully separate our waste to dump it in the different containers.
We may wish to be kind to the environment leaving the car parked in the garage to walk a little bit, or if need be, we may arrange with a neighbour or a relative to go together to work.
These are necessary and kind actions for the environment as citizens, but the most serious issues haven’t been tackled yet, and to add salt in the injury, the countries that are destroying our environment at lightening speed don’t want to listen or do anything.
As in past Conferences and summits, it will be preaching in the dessert as far as governments are concerned.
BIRTH CONTROL
Last year the Pope was in Spain to address to the thousands of followers in what they call the World Youth Encounter.
Once again, we heard him claiming against abortion, contraceptives, gay marriage and divorce as though it was his mantra. Or, is it? Once again, he told them that a good Catholic will have as many children as God wishes to grant them. People cheered and clapped enthusiastically and many of them came from countries where they almost have nothing (or nothing at all) to live on. But worry not, Christmas will arrive and they will bring us loads of charity appeals to save the hungry and the needy.
Few days ago, a young lad came to me begging for money, because his wife was pregnant or so he told me, and they had nowhere to live. “You know what?” I replied to him “If one can’t afford to have a child, one should refrain from having one!”
One may think that babies are sooo cute and blah, blah, blah, but a child will become an adult and they will have needs such as education, food, house, work… On the other hand, the planet can’t hold many more people. This is also unsustainable.
The more I look around and I read this or that, the more I am convinced that we have progressed very little no matter how many new inventions and gadgets we have. Only irrational animals pair, copulate and have their creatures, but aren’t human beings rational ones to make a difference from those in the jungle?
