Types of gabions

From control of soil erosion to landscaping, gabions have a variety of applications. Essentially a gabion is a big wire basket or wire cage filled with material like stones. A gabion thus allows water to go through it while retaining solid particles like grains of soil.

In the past militaries could construct gabions to hide behind the while they engaged the enemy. Currently in use are various types of gabions as discussed below;

Bastion
A bastion gabion is the type that has an extra lining or membrane placed inside the wire basket. This membrane has very small holes or just pore that can allow water out and retain soil. Bastion thus allow usage of such much a soil and san in the gabion in the place of rocks.

Reno mattresses
Reno mattresses are a type of gabions that have a very low height that is with a few centimeters. This form of gabions is used in areas that experience mass surface erosion to protect the earth on that surface. An example is down a slope, the gabion is laid down over the area such that it allows water to go over the rocks while the rocks protect the earth beneath them.

Green Terramesh Systems
Green terramesh systems contain an inner layer of bio-degradable material. A little of its height is buried into the ground and the retaining height is erected above it. Green terramesh systems are suitable for erosion control in reclaimed lands because plants can be grown on them.
Reno mattresses are filled to a few centimeters of rocks but can spread out to very large areas. They are most suitable for draining channel floors and any areas with high water traffic.

Trapion
Trapions are a type of gabions that assume a trapezoidal cross section through them. The trapezoidal cross section allows stacking of the gabions and gives them a sloping appearance instead of a steeped appearance. Trapions are widely used in civil engineering to retain soil in deep slopes on road sides.

Gabions are able to assume different shapes and can take any dimensions as directed by the user. In the pas gabions were cylindrical in shape but have evolved over time due to varying requirements with differing applications. Gabions can be used to create low fences in landscaping.
