This is my opinion list of the ten best comedy sitcoms of all time. Hopefully, readers will agree with most of the ones I put up on this list, and if you do not, there is a comment box below the article and you may comment what should and should not be on here.
11. In memory of the late and great actor, Andy Griffith, I have decided to add The Andy Griffith Show on this list as an honorary #11 because it only narrowly missed this list of great sitcoms. May he rest in peace.
10. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996)- The Will Smith led comedy sitcom breaks the top 10 list with its quick quips and its neverending humor it seems. Will pokes fun at everything and everyone around him, but the funniest moments are when he jokes about his vertically challenged cousin Carlton or his overweight, old-school Uncle Phil. Overall, this sitcom is one of the least respected and most humorous of a lot of them out there.
9. Two and a Half Men (2003-present)- After spending nine seasons on television and still running pretty strong on the gags with Ashton Kutcher at the helm, Two and a Half Men is a shoe-in to make this list. Dubbed the best comedy sitcom of 2000s decade, it gained much success with its very interesting character development and the obvious sexual references. However, the shelf life of this show cannot be much longer as the half man has grown up into a third man and 'Three Men' is not a great title for a show.
8. Frasier (1993-2004)- It is stated by many that Frasier is the best of all time, but honestly, Frasier never really caught on with me. The humor was very sophisticated and one joke rolled into the other, but my patience for this setup ran out. However, I cannot deny it was popular, lasted eleven seasons, and is not just a one time laugh type of show. That is good enough for me.
7. The Office (2005-present)- The stalwart NBC comedy sitcom and remake of the Ricky Gervais British version seemed to be more of a success than the original. Although the show is not as funny to me without Michael Scott, Jim and Dwight will continue to impress audiences. However, after eight seasons of lather, rinse, and repeat of shenanigans, I do not know how much longer they will last.
6. Modern Family (2009-present)- Anyone who has watched Modern Family can definitely tell you that the comedy sitcom genre is not done yet. The only other mockumentary of an extended family I had ever seen before this one was the failing Arrested Development, which unfortunately did not make this list. But Modern Family gets the #6 spot for its uniqueness and laugh out loud humor.
5. Married... with Children (1987-1997)- This sitcom was wrong on so many levels at the time it was on, but it was one of the first shows to premiere on FOX and got more successful as it went on. This show had its extremely funny moments, and portrayed morealess a typical family, although a tad extreme at point. I applaud this series for its originality and literally no other series has and will ever be anything like it.
4. The Larry Sanders Show (1992-1998)- This sitcom for HBO was probably one of the best of all time. It did not need a live audience or a laugh track for you to know when the quips would happen. It was a sitcom about Larry Sanders and his show and the odd and hilarious things that happen behind the scenes. It was quite successful and won many Primetime Emmy's. There is no way I could leave this hilarious sitcom off the list (it is also one of the few that is (TV-MA).
3. That '70s Show (1998-2006)- How could I have a list of the best sitcoms without That '70s Show? That show defined situational comedy and satiring a decade way before what we knew. After this series ended, however, everyone knew what the 1970s were like and they wanted to go back in time and live it. The show was hysterical and the character development and sarcasm with a bit of physical humor made the show.
2. Seinfeld (1989-1998)- Seinfeld was always in its own category and always gave you a laugh no matter how dull the events may have seemed. That found a humorous plot out of anything and everything around them, no matter where they were and what they were doing. The characters were loveable and honestly could not have been better developed. Seinfeld is a true great in comedy sitcoms.
1. Friends (1994-2004)- Friends has always been my personal favorite. This show has everything Seinfeld and the others on this list have, but the one thing this show has over all of them is rewatch ability. You can rewatch any episode, know all the punchlines, know what is going to happen next, and yet still end up cracking up. Friends was always good for those laugh out loud moments and those moments and twists that you do not expect. It was overall a masterpiece and no one can deny it being placed #1 on this list. I agree with some of your choices, I would add Rosanne, Dawson's Creek,
and the Cosby Show. Just a few of my old favorites.
It is bad enough you don't have arrested development or curb your enthusiasm but having friends as number one totally discounts your list. Sorry, but it's the truth.
I've already replied on a previous comment about Arrested Development. Although I personally loved the show, and the quality was higher than some on this list, its impact was pretty much nothing on the genre itself.
As for Curb Your Enthusiasm, I could never really get into the show. Also, like Arrested Development, I don't think it really had as much of an impact. But I give it props for longevity.
excussse me where is the cosby show. that is one of the most famous comedy sitcoms of alll time. hello u just disrespected so many cosby fans
For #10, it was a toss up between Fresh Prince and Cosby Show, and though Cosby Show had a longer run and a heftier fan base, I fell Fresh Prince was more quality humor while Cosby was somewhat dry at points.
where is how i met your mother or 30 rock ??
How come "The Big Bang Theory" didn't make the list??? It's one of the best!
I love Big Bang Theory personally, but it just has not been around long enough to prove anything. The one thing that Modern Family did was save a dying ABC network. CBS is known for its comedies, so Big Bang Theory is just another footnote, as funny as it is.
Frasier over Cheers (the show Frasier was spun off)? and how is Cheers not on this list?!
I'm not going to lie to you: I wasn't really much of a fan of either one. Cheers would probably just break a top 20 in my opinion. However, Cheers never really had a steady cast. Frasier's cast stayed almost the same throughout, whereas Cheers could not keep the same main characters. Only two characters from the beginning were still there at the end.
Strike that: 3 main characters.
Why not arrested development?? WAy better than 2 and a half men or even modern family...
Let me first say that I loved Arrested Development when it was on. And it should have lasted longer than it did, but the biggest problem is that fans never really got into the show like they did for most on this list.
I will give you that Arrested Development did have a higher quality than Two and a Half Men, but I felt that Two and a Half Men helped keep the sitcom genre running while it was on, after some of the greats such as Friends, Frasier, and Seinfeld all went off the air. It gave viewers hope that the sitcom genre was still good and strong, hence why it has been around so long.
Arrested Development just never gained the fan base it was supposed to, which to me, is unbelievable. If this were a top 20 list, Arrested Development would surely make it by a landslide.
How the heck did you not add King of Queens? That was probably the highest rated comedy that was ever on TV! Each week it soared in ratings. This list sucks, go suck an egg you loser...
Just because it had good ratings does not mean it was good. I pair King of Queens up with Everybody Loves Raymond: highly rated, long lasting, and not very funny. And as for your last comment, grow up man.
Comedy Sitcom is redundant. Sitcom is short for Situational Comedy
However, there are people who consider some dramas as sitcoms as well, so I wanted to make it perfectly clear I was only listing comedies. M*A*S*H for example is considered a sitcom to some, however it is not a comedy sitcom, nor is it really a sitcom in my opinion. But to some, it is different.
While I like all the shows you list, and agree that they are among the best, I think you lack depth . . . I Love Lucy not on the list because you haven't seen enough episodes? How about Dick Van Dyke? Green Acres? All in the Family? Mash? If you want to say the best of the last 20 years your list is fair . . . but the best ever??? Hardly.
I will admit that I do have a lack of knowledge for sitcoms before the 1970s. I was not a fan of Dick Van Dyke, although I do know it was a pioneer of the sitcom genre. I Love Lucy is great, but as I said, I have not watched enough of it to judge it either way, and I don't want to rate it up or down because I don't know enough about it. All In The Family is not that good in my opinion. Green Acres was OK, but I feel all of the ones I listed out rank Green Acres. I don't consider M*A*S*H a sitcom. I consider M*A*S*H more of a drama series.
You may say that this list is only the best of the last 20-25 years, but think about it. The sitcom era was revolutionized by these newer sitcoms, even where Dick Van Dyke and I Love Lucy lacked. Sure, the pioneers of the genre were quite amazing in their own right, but at the same time, character development was much more firm and consistent in all the ones I have listed.
Man, I've watched Seinfeld the first time, and cried from laughter the eighth time it was so funny! Numero uno for Seinfeld! And absolutely on Raymond for number 2! That show's freaking hilarious!
Seinfeld was a great sitcom, but Everybody Loves Raymond? I cannot stand that show, and it was not even that good; it rarely ever made me laugh whatsoever, so I stopped watching it.
have u tried watching everybody loves raymond?
thtll be second for me
Frasier a mere number 8 and Modern Family a number 6? And Seinfeld number 2? If I were writing this list, Frasier would be one, Modern Family second and Seinfeld third, but only because Seinfeld is not comparable to any of these sitcoms in that it incorporates stand-up comedy, which is just incredibly hilarious. The humor employed by Friends not only didn't appeal to me, but it failed to keep me satisfied for more than a few seasons. It was too contrived, and it had a strong laugh track that made me feel obliged to laugh, when, really, the jokes weren't all that funny. To give credit where it is due, some jokes were indeed funny, but not to the extent of earning it a number one spot.
Frasier and Modern Family carry themselves with class, and the jokes are very funny and never get old. Cam and Mitchell literally dare anyone not to love them, exactly what Niles does when he offers a witty remark in response to Frasier's. What's there not to love, I fail to see. Frasier lasted eleven seasons for a reason, and I can only hope Modern Family would be close to follow in its footsteps.
Like Friends really never appealed to you, Frasier never really appealed to me. Frasier lasted 11, and Friends lasted 10, both for good reason. Modern Family is hilarious, and certainly the best sitcom on TV currently, but it can't compete, in my opinion, with Friends, Seinfeld, That 70s Show, or Larry Sanders. Thanks for the comment.
Friends is definitely my favorite of all. So I simply agree!
Oh, and any list of the top sitcoms of all time that doesn't include I Love Lucy, All in the Family or The Jeffersons is a bit of a joke. There were plenty of GREAT sitcoms before 1987...
I will agree that I Love Lucy is a good one, but at the same time, I have not watched enough of it to judge it thumbs up or thumbs down. All in the Family had its moments, but I don't think it can compete with the likes of Seinfeld, Friends, or Larry Sanders. And The Jeffersons never really caught on with me; I really don't know why. It is a well made show. And also the reason I picked Friends at #1 was because of the way it shaped the sitcom genre from its beginning to its end. Many future sitcoms took its form and it showed that there does not have to be one star to outshine the rest. Seinfeld was also genius and very funny. It was honestly a very tough decision to pick a #1 from those 2. But the reason most of my sitcoms are from the 1990s is because the 1990s were the Golden Age of sitcoms. It was when almost every sitcom was well made and very well known. I will admit I gave a bias to a few, but I think all of the ones I listed deserve a place at the top. Thanks for the comment; it was very insightful.
I can deny Friends was better than Seinfeld. It wasn't.
Seinfeld is MUCH more rewatchable, and has given pop culture a LOT more in terms of historical relevance than Friends ever will...
The Soup Nazi, the contest, the low talker, the high talker, the close talker, the jimmy legs, the re-gifter - I could go on for twenty pages.
Friends was a nice fashion show with beautiful people that had good writing and decent actors. Seinfeld was simply the best sitcom. Ever.
my current favorite is The Big Bang Theory. I liked it because it was different, and the characters stand out. The lovable perv Howard, and Sheldon the OCD genius.. they just amuse me. While it hasn't been around long enough to stand up in a "top 10" of all time list (at least not yet) because its only been on TV for 5 seasons, I hope that it eventually earns its spot in the Top 5 of the 2000s at least :))
The Big Bang Theory would certainly be #2 in the top 5 best of the 2000s! I am in complete agreement!
