One generally does not associate women with motorcycles except as a sexual show piece to help either market the bike or as an appendage to a man. One of the factors is a plethora of bike gang movies like ‘Mad Max I’ and ‘Mad Max II’. But this is not the entire truth and women motorcyclists are coming on the roads in greater numbers. In fact a good many 4 decades back a cult movie ‘The Girl on a Motorcycle’ was doing the rounds of the cinema halls.
Having accepted that there is nothing taboo about a woman riding a bike we can examine some do’s and don’ts to help a woman on her way on a motorcycle. The first step is selecting a bike. Remember the bigger the bike the more stable it will be on the road. Thus it would be appropriate to select a bike which should have a four stroke engine and a capacity of about 400 to 500 cc. Such a bike will give optimum performance on the road.
The second step is to select a bike with a self starter option. Most bikes come with this option; hence selecting a bike with a self start option will obviate the necessity of kicking a bike to start. A woman riding a bike must know how to ride a bicycle as this will give her the necessary confidence in handling the bike itself.
The next step is to learn about the gear shifts and all controls on the bike like brakes, clutch cable, headlight switches and indicator lights. It is important that the woman learns how to lift a bike if it falls prone on the ground. A little bit of practice in some are near you home will go a long way in knowing the nuances of lifting the bike.Remember some of the heavier bikes will weigh over 600kg and a woman get in the groove of slowly lifting it up and putting on the side stand.
A woman must equip herself to ride a bike.Thus she must wear riding boots and leather gloves. In addition a full riding suit that zips up to the chin is a must.It will give protection against the elements of nature and the girl will fee protected as well. Wearing a helmet is a must and a good quality helmet with a visor just cannot be dispensed with. A woman will have to adjust her hair in such a way that the helmet fits snugly on the head. Remember the head is the most vulnerable area and head injuries can be fatal.
The riding procedure is simple. Self start the bike and sit on it before with your foot you lift the side stand and slowly move forward. As the bike moves forward you will feels a sense of exhilaration. Do not get carried away and keep within the permissible speed limits. Follow all road signs and signals and never tax the machine.
Riding a bike is a macho sport, but there is no bar to a woman having a thrill of riding a motorbike. Lastly keep yourself fit as riding a bike is also dependent on your level of fitness. If you follow these simple instruction bike riding will be a pleasure. Bike riding is certainly on the up with about 16% motorcyclists on the road in the States.
