Getting a good night’s sleep is essential if you want to feel your best and want your mind to be sharp. However, many people suffer from insomnia and it can make your life a misery if it is not addressed and brought under control. A lack of sleep can make day to day life harder to cope with and the tired-all-of-the-time feeling can make you feel stressed and unable to cope.

Some doctors will suggest sleeping pills while others will suggest that you try a more natural approach in order to get a good night’s sleep and advise you to develop good sleeping habits. Here are some tips which might help you get a better night’s rest.

First of all, you should address any underlying issues. If you have health problems then you need to speak to a doctor about these, and if you are a chronic pain sufferer then you also need to see a doctor who can help you manage your symptoms.

Make sure that you have a comfortable mattress - not too firm or too soft - and a comfortable pillow. You could also try using a lavender pillow under your usual pillow as lavender is known for its calming effects.

Ensure that your room is perfectly dark. Any shards of light can make you feel more wakeful and stop you getting to sleep. Try a blind for the window to block out light and use a sleeping mask to cover your eyes and to help you relax.

Choose a routine that helps you to wind down at the end of the day and don’t have caffeine late at night. You should also avoid watching violent or action packed films or TV shows late at night as these provide stimulus which can keep you awake.

Hot milk or hot chocolate make a relaxing evening drink, or you could try a night time tea blended with camomile and other relaxing herbs. There are also other herbal remedies designed to help you relax, but you should talk to a doctor before taking these.
