‘Time is money’ .’Time is precious’. ‘Time and Tide wait for none’. ‘Lost time is never found again’. ‘Time heals all wounds’. These are some of the often repeated phrases and proverbs we are familiar with.
All of them are perfectly true. The value of time is beyond any question. In this electronic age, everything is valued and measured by time. Laborers are paid by the hours. Faxes and telexes are calculated by the minutes. A couple of seconds can dramatically change the complexion of any race or a game, and turn it into a thriller. Every second, therefore, is important.
If you don’t know the value of time, then you will be wasting a lot of it. In this world of rat-race and stiff competition, when people are running helter-skelter, sometimes aimlessly, it is good to take a fair stock of time. Otherwise, as the Spanish proverb says, “You may outrun the wind and the whirl-wind, but you can never outrun the demon on hurry”.
It is inescapable for everybody to earn his living, until a good deal of time is spent. Indeed even in this, the necessity of the proper use of time is very important. Waste of time lies at the root of all the miseries. From the beginning to the end of our education, every effort is made to impress upon the supreme value of time. Misuse of time is a vice from which we cannot escape. We know its disastrous consequences, and still fall victim to it very frequently, and when we regain our senses, it is often too late to mind.
The habit of missing time creeps stealthily through the deceptive vice of procrastination. “To put off till tomorrow what can be done today,” gradually strikes the root in our character. Sometimes a thing is done when opportune moment is over, in such cases the whole labor is lost. So, work must be done in time, and tendency of deferring task till tomorrow must be carefully avoided. “Today and not tomorrow,” must be the motto of life for everyone to get success and prosperity. Procrastination and indolence are the vices that must be milled, at their birth. Once they are allowed to grow, they can’t be easily thrown off, and often last throughout life, causing untold miseries and repeatedly failures.
Time is valuable, but there are some moments that are more precious than the rest. Success in life depends mainly on the use of opportunities which are few and least, but for a while, if they are allowed to slip by delayed efforts, do never suffice to compensate the loss. That is known as striking the iron when it is hot, or making the hay when the sun shines. Whether in business or anywhere else, when the opportune moment comes, every effort is made to make best use of time.
Many make use of time judiciously and very meticulously to get their work done. If a person manages to organize his time, he or she will be surprised at the amount of work he or she can do. Like an unending current, the time of life is flowing out. In course of its swift journey, nations have risen and fallen and are yet doing the same. Historically, those who have better utilized their time have prospered. Again prosperous nation collapsed when their people forgot the importance of using time, and optimistically putting effort leading towards modernization. The progress of America, Russia or Great Britain is nothing more than the time of their people converted into money, health, poetry, philosophy and science. In the East, a good deal of poverty and backwardness is the result of misuse of time. Their people believe in lip service only. They work less, and talk more.
Once a professor asked the world renowned scientist Albert Einstein who propounded the theory of relativity, the difference between ‘Time and Eternity’. Einstein answered rather casually “my dear friend, if I take the time to explain it, you will take an eternity to understand it.”
We really wonder at this magnificent march of time, and the fascinating history of mankind. However, this all leads us to a very clear conclusion that human life has a purpose to serve. To live in the present, to remain content with two bare meals a day, is negation of that end. It’s reality, that life is so short that we cannot afford to spoil a single moment, if we mean to work up to that end of time for us, and hence life. We must therefore, utilize every period of time wisely. Time is so fleeting, so elusive, that not a single lost moment can be retrieved, even in exchange for all the earth’s wealth. A moment lost is lost for good. Hence, the need of making the best of every minute that is flowing out into the eternity, where from it will never return. Organize your life and respect the value of time.
