The Third and Final Continent by Jhumpa Lahiri

After reading The Third and Final Continent by Jhumpa Lahiri , from my point of view this story is interesting to be discuses . There are many things that can be share . The main character for the story is the narrator .He is the character that I like most . The narrator who is from Calcutta left India in 1964 and travel to England and then to the America . He work as a librarian at the university . I like him because he is responsible person . He pay the rent at time and left the money where is suppose to be . He also a caring person . After he get know his landlord, Mrs. Croft is more than 100 years old , he get more intention on her . He also worried what will happen to Mrs. Croft if he not around .

The next character that I like is the landlord, Mrs. Croft . She have a piano .She was a good pianist when she was young. She used to teach many people on how to play piano. She was a bit stubborn. She have a daughter name Halen Croft .She lived alone in the house even though she had a daughter. She rented the room for people from M.I.T and Harvard . Like the narrator, he from M.I.T .Mrs. Croft also the one who make the narrator realize the goodness in his wife . The narrator married to his wife that been arrange by his brother .

The theme for the The Third and Final Continent is perseverance will lead to a better life. The narrator facing lots of difficulties and got the determination to change his life. For the first time he went to England, he was penniless. He studying at L.S.E and at the same time worked at the university library. After he got married, he flew to Boston to work in the library again at M.I.T. He left his wife at Calcutta just wanted to search for a better life. At last, he lives happily with his wife and their son in a town about twenty miles from Boston.

The other theme is acceptance other culture will lead to harmony. The narrator find out that when he walked to work, he saw an Indian woman wearing a sari freely and nearly to drag on the footpath while pushing her child in the stroller and suddenly a dog which belongs to an American woman started to bark and seized the end of her sari. The American woman scolded the dog and began to apologize to her.

Setting for the story is took place in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1969. The city had two major universities that attracted many foreigners. Boston provided an opportunity to those looking for and education and a better way of life. Many viewed Boston as an international city. It became a home for the young man from India. For the time setting is is 1964 when the narrator left India and went to England . Also in 1969 is the year when narrator get married to his wife .

The issues that author raises in the story is the hardship of the immigrant who is travel to other country who seek the better in life . The narrator have difficulty when he arrive at the foreign country . The marriage life also the issue in the story . The narrator have some problem to his wife because he did know much about his wife at first and then he love his wife as what she is .

The Third and Finale Continent is a great story and it should been read by everyone . There are many massage that try to be delivered by the author , Jhumpa Hilari .
