For couples who spend most days of the week either at home or the office, the weekend or a public holiday would be a great way to get away from the usual environment and feel refreshed. While doing things spontaneously without plans would add to the thrill, chances are, it will be offset by minor inconveniences caused by lack of planning. So it is best to have a checklist and plan ahead, especially if the whole family is involved.

1. The car. Make sure you did not forget its last maintenance schedule. If it is due next month, it is better to have it checked ahead of time. Besides, the mechanic will be happy to see you each time and provide reliable inputs. Brakes, tires, battery, signal lights, etc.

2. The weather. Weather forecasts are available online and on TV a few days in advance. Make sure the place and activity that you intend to do would match mother nature’s moods. Besides, it could help you what time you would start and end your trip to avoid fog or minimize night time travel.

3. The destinations. Given the time, set priorities about the places that you intend to visit. This is perhaps most applicable if you want to visit a nearby city which has a lot of attractions. Obviously you will not have enough time to visit all the interesting spots. Discuss which places would make you happiest and rank them all.

4. Things to bring. Make sure you have all the things you cannot do without. You don’t want to be reminded in the middle of the road that you forgot say, the tent or the fishing rod or the camera. First aid kits should also be included in that list. Just in case.

5. Pit stops. This is very important for the safety of everybody. Don’t push your driver to the limits and stop, maybe every forty five minutes. Drowsiness, fatigue or lack of concentration can be very dangerous and would be easily remedied if only you are patient enough to stop for a few minutes at rest stations.

Wherever we are and whatever you do, a long trip to interesting destinations would be a great way bond with all members of the family. Enjoy your trip!
