I've been thinking a lot lately about the importance of having a stable mind in todays society. I think it's something that many people take for granted. Many of us may have recently heard about the unfortunate suicide of former NFL Linebacker, Junior Seau. Most of us can probably recall the unfortunate death of actor, Heath Ledger. Ledger was another talented celebrity that appeared to be troubled. Regardless as to how these two men lives ended, both of their losses were tragic and way too soon. The list could go on about the celebrities and people in general who appeared to have the perfect lives, but were troubled to the point where their mental state played a role in their demise. So many people may wonder to themselves; Why would someone who appears to have the perfect life allow other circumstances or abuse to control them?
It appears that many athletes, celebrities, and entertainers mentally have a hard time coping with certain aspects of life. It could possibly stem from the constant spotlight that they're placed under. Most of us understand that mental hurdles in life are not only limited to celebrities. Everyday people like you and I can be affected as well. There is however a main difference that can be pointed out. Most everyday people probably wish they could trade their lives for the life that a celebrity lives. Not because of the fame that comes with being a celebrity, but the fortune that it brings. However, we've heard that there is a price that comes with fame and fortune. We've all seen the interviews and documentaries of various famous people who have struggled with addictions. No person can say they know exactly what causes famous people or anyone for that matter to take their own life. Unless you've personally dealt with it in the past, no one understands why people use drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. Seeing someone famous on the television daily who appears to have the trappings of a perfect life doesn't mean that there aren't lingering problems there. Every human being will have problems in life. It's all about how we choose to tackle them. A stable and sound mind coincides with health in general, and there isn't enough money on this planet to buy good health.
I believe that our minds are our most important asset. Our minds not only play a factor in how we learn and process things, it's also probably our most important tool to our survival. I believe many of the assessments and judgments we make about others are based a lot on what type of mindset they have. For example, if a person carries themselves in a manner that is deemed socially inappropriate, it could say a lot about the type of character they have. Character is one of the biggest things that people judge others on. With the times we are living in and the troubles that are constantly out there in this world, it's not hard to imagine that someone could lose their mind. There are so many things that could break a person mentally: the loss of a job or career, a tough divorce or break-up in a relationship. Even the death of a loved one can drain a person mentally to the point where it forever changes their state of mind. Regardless as to whether you're rich or poor, anyone can be affected by these things.
If you are someone who has a sound and stable and sound mind in today's world, consider yourself to be blessed. Also give yourself credit for maintaining and being a strong individual. I don't claim to be an expert when it comes to these kinds of things. However, I know someone that I was once friends with who experienced a change mentally. I don't know exactly what events or circumstances brought on the change in him. All I know is that he became a totally different person from the kid I grew up with. Whatever circumstances that caused the change that occurred within him put a serious strain on our friendship. It's sad to imagine that these things can happen to people we know and are close to. I know many people wish that they lived the life that people who have money live. Just remember that there is no price tag on having a stable mind. To survive todays world we need not only be physically strong, but also mentally tough as we possibly can.
