With the busy schedules of our everyday lives, it is very common that people usually neglect or ignore changes in their vision or soreness of the eyes.  When the time comes that your vision becomes blurry or misty and you cannot see things clearly, do not delay your appointment to the optometrist.  You will regret it in the long run.

Wearing eyeglasses is usually perceived as “geeky” especially when you are in the age-range of early teens to early twenties and so many are self conscious to wear them when prescribed and opts to disregard wearing a pair.  This is a definite mistake that you can possibly make because your eyes will become much worse.  If the prescription is only for correctional purposes, it will probably take less than six (6) months to correct your vision.  You cannot afford to be stubborn when it comes to your health.

Based from my personal experience, it only took less than a year for my eyesight to go from “correctional” to “irreversible.”  Because I was a stubborn teenager and did not want to be associated with anything nerdy, I refused to wear my eye glasses.  The trouble with that is I am a complete and addict reader.  I read anything from newspapers to complete novel sagas.  So from a prescription of negative 45, it became negative 450.  And now, I cannot see anything ahead of me when I am not wearing my eyeglasses or contact lenses.

The following are tips for looking after your eyes:

  • Give your eyes a rest.  If your job entails you to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time, make sure that your eyes look at something else for at least 5 minutes every 2 hours.  Preferably something green.  So look outside the window or place a small plant in your office.
  • If you experience redness & soreness of the eyes within the day, buy some eye drops to relieve them.
  • If this continues, make sure you visit your optometrist on the third day.
  • Wear the prescribed eyeglasses.  Buy the prescribed medicine. Don’t be stubborn.

And if there is no other choice and you are stuck with contact lenses, look after them by:

  • Cleaning your contact lenses every night.
  • Hands must be washed with soap and water.  Afterwards, use an alcohol so that germs will not get to your contact lenses.
  • Make sure that the lens cases are cleaned and sterilized before using them.
  • Use the solutions that were prescribed for you.  If you are planning to change brands, make sure to get a clearance from your doctor first.
  • Do not leave your contact lenses on when you sleep.  However tired you are when you get home, make sure to take them out.
