1965

These are the best films of 1965 and the ones that will qualify for my best 2000 films list. Only 8 entries makes the number 876 now the number of recommended films in a very lean year (and I don’t mean David).

1. Cat Ballou – great western satire makes this a top 2000 pick
2. Dr. Zhivago – long Russian Revolution finally gets to top 2000
3. The Collector – great surprise film makes both top 2000 and top 100 list
4. Agony and the Ecstasy – not really a spectacle, but good enough for the top 2000
5. Battle of the Bulge – not the greatest WW2 film, but good enough for the top 2000
6. Cincinnati Kid – could have been better, but is now dated, anyway as a just miss
7. Lord Jim – a nice O’Toole performance wasted in this uneven film that just misses
8. Von Ryan’s Express – conventional WW2 film just misses the train like Sinatra
A very lean year indeed.
