The Sufi Way to Peace, Safety and Love
Sufis, those who live Islamic Spirituality, strongly believe that the realm of peace lies in the Center of each and every human being: our real Self, inborn divinity, spiritual origin that is “the heart”. When we are conscious of the Center of our being we experience several things that we cannot go through otherwise:
a) We become conscious of the bond that connects us to a higher Source of existence; our Lord and Sustainer.
b) We also discover that this very bond connects us to our fellow humans and all aspects of creation.
c) We attain confidence that every particle of the universe, big or small, is created to live in peace with all others.
d) We transform into channels that spread peace in all directions.
In the Holy Qur’an we read many times that enjoying peace and safety in this life and the coming one is a fruit of humans’ consciousness of their relation to their Sustainer:
Allah guideth all who seek His good pleasure to ways of peace and safety… (HQ 5: 16)
For them will be a Home of Peace in the presence of their Lord: He will be their Friend….)(HQ 6: 127)
Allah doth call to the Home of Peace...(HQ 10: 25)
The Prophet Muhammad says:
Attain peace and send it to all; those whom you know and even those whom you do not know.
Islamic teachings uncover to humans that the journey to peace starts by purification of the heart, through connection to a higher Source. The Divine says:
Earth and Heaven contain Me not but the heart of my faithful servant contains me (DV)
And the Prophet Muhammad says:
The human body contains a piece of clot that is when healed, the whole body is healed: this is the heart (PH)
For Sufis, to be connected to one’s center is also to be connected to the Center of Light, Love and Peace on Earth. The symbol for this is the (Quibla); God’s Home in Mecca. It is much more than a physical place; it a spiritual realm that constitutes the real and eternal Shelter (Home) for those who choose a life of peace and love, beyond any name or label.
Sufis believe that the Home is one and embraces all humans, but the roads that lead to it are as myriad as the number of human breath. In The Holy Qur’an we read that God “made the House a place of assembly for humans and a place of safety”.(HQ: 2: 125).
“…. whoever enters it attains security”(HQ: 3: 97)
Al Sheikh Muhie el deen Ibn Arabi, the well know Sufi of the 13th century said:
My heart has become capable of accepting every form
A pasture for gazelles and a monastery for monks
A temple for idols and a pilgrim’s Ka’ba
Tablets for the Torah and the book of the Qur’an
I follow the religion of love wherever its mounts lead
This is my religion and my faith
Ibn Arabi was really expressing his experience of being connected to the Source of all Love that is susceptible to be manifested in myriad ways and infinite forms. And so did Mawlana Galal el Deen Al Rumi:
Don't you see that the roads to Mecca are all different?...The roads are different, the goal one...When people come there, all quarrels or differences or disputes that happened along the road are resolved...Those who shouted at each other along the road 'you are wrong' or 'you are an infidel' forgot their differences when they come there because there, all hearts are in unison.
So, the Sufi way to peace is so simple and straightforward:
• Keep yourself in the Center of your being and let it guide your steps.
• Keep up your connection to the Source of peace all the time.
You will feel as secure as being at Home. You will naturally have nothing to send to all but peace and love.
