When having to go on sick leave may be something that many employees dread of Or, these, who wishing to take extra time off, will report sick to turn up as soon as they know there is someone in their post.

One of my friend’s brother who has been unemployed for around 20 years attended a job interview to take over from a man who had gone on sick leave. This guy was happy enough at having found a job at long last if only for as long as the man’s illness lasted. He  was even happier, because he was taking over a caretaker and he didn’t have much to do except to sit at the entrance desk to watch people coming and going. But there is no joy to last forever and as soon as the man found out that someone was doing his job, he went back to work, claiming that he was well, already.

Another friend who is a qualified childminder to work in creches and infant schools is perennially on call waiting for a woman to go on sick or pregnancy leave in wherever she works. A pregnancy one would be better for her, because it would guaranty her a nine month contract. But anyway she is permanently on-call and available for whatever casualty comes up. Last year, she was happy enough, because after being several months idling around, she was called to take over from a woman who claimed to suffer from bad backache and sore legs. She went on sick paid leave, thinking perhaps that she would link those days with her annual leave. My friend went to work to be released four days after, because the woman had reported for work claiming again that she was well, already. “Didn’t she said she suffered from bad backache?” I asked to my friend. “So did she!”"

On Monday last, I received one of these calls that would really put a broad smile on my face. Human resources at five starred Villa Magna Hotel asked me if I could take over from a chambermaid who was going on paid sick leave. Obviously, I said I would! No matter how that girl’s illness was going to last, I have been striving to work in this luxurious hotel for the rich of many places for a good while now. We had agreed on everything and she told that if she wasn’t calling again, I should start on the next day at 9.

I was already congratulating myself on my good luck and thinking that I had to go to the shops to get a pair of black shoes for work when the telephone rang again. The human resources manager told me that she was sorry to tell me that the girl had reported for work, feeling a lot better. “Oh, that was a speedy recovery, thought I!

I will still go to the shops to get a good pair of black shoes to see if they bring good luck to walk in their luxurious carpets and rugs.
