A newly introduced game feature provides an achievement and helpful bonuses.
Getting the Amulet
This is the easiest and fastest way to obtain the amulet and the ability to marry in the temple.
Requires 260 gold.
Step 1: Travel to Riften. This can easily be done by going to Whiterun and paying 20 gold for the carriage to take you there, or any carriage you prefer.
Step 2: When you arrive at the stables, find a Riften guard. He will be wearing purple guard armor. This is the fastest way to get to the inner city without navigating your way through. You can find a few guards by walking down the path.
Step 3: It is recommended to save before doing this step. Attack the guard by hitting him with your sword, shield, arrow or magic. Be careful not to kill him. After attacking him ONCE, immediately sheathe your weapon using the sheathe button for your console. (ex. Xbox users hold down X, PS3 users hold down square)
Step 3: He will then say you have commited a crime. Choose the first option to pay 40 gold to be taken into the city.
Step 4: Locate the Bee and Barb. Right when you enter the city, walk straight and cross the bridge into the marketplace. From the marketplace, the Bee and Barb should be right in front of it. If you have trouble finding it, refer to your local map.
Step 5: Once you are inside, look for Maramal, who is wearing robes and having a conversation with someone else. Talk to him before he leaves the inn. Go through his options and pay 200 gold for the Amulet of Mara. If you have obtained the amulet without him, make sure you speak to him about marriage or else you can’t propose.
Proposing
WARNING: Make sure that is who you absolutely want to marry, because the only way to marry someone else is by killing your spouse!
Proposal dialogue has two requirements:
1. You must wear the Amulet of Mara.
2. You must have completed a quest or a series of quests for them.
If these requirements are met, there should be a new dialogue option to propose to them. (If this option does not appear and these two requirements are met, they cannot be married.)
Marriage
Once proposed, speak to Maramal at the Temple of Mara in the inner part of Riften. Use your local map to help you find it.
The time to start a ceremony takes 24 hours, between 6:00am-6:00pm. During the ceremony the player has one last chance to affirm the marriage before the ceremony proceeds.
If you miss your Wedding Ceremony you can approach your wife or husband and ask for another chance. Then you can talk to Maramal the next day and he will agree to have another ceremony and you may try again.
Married Life
Your husband or wife will ask where you want to live. You can choose to live with them or in your own house, such as in Whiterun the Breezehome.
If they locate to a different city into your home, they might say they want to become a shop owner. You can then ask them every day how the shop is doing to receive 100 gold in-game per 24 hours. You will then be able to buy and sell from them like a regular merchant.
If you wish to relocate them to a different house or their original house, you can do so by dialogue.
They can also make a Homemade Meal that will increase the regeneration of magicka, health, and stamina once per day by asking them to cook for you.
If you sleep in the same house as your spouse, you will receive a temporary bonus called the “Lovers Comfort” that boosts the rate of skill-learning by 15% for 8 hours. You won’t receive this bonus however if you are a werewolf.
They can become your follower, however they will only sell you things from their inventory until you dismiss them.
Divorce
There is no official way to divorce your husband or wife yet, but the only way so far is to kill your spouse, allowing you to marry someone else.
