Shylock was very happy and stared sharpening his knife. But Portia told him to wait and listen to her.

Portia: Shylock, you will have nothing more and nothing less than what is written in the bond. The bond says that you will have one pound of Antonio’s flesh, but it does not say that you will have his blood too. So, if you shed one drop of his blood you will pay the property. The law is very clear on this point. You can now cut a pound of Antonio’s flesh from nearest his heart.

Shylock could not say a word now. He was very unhappy and wanted to get his money and go away. Bassanio was about to give it to him but Portia stopped him.

Portia: I am sorry. You will get nothing now. The court must follow the law. You wanted to take the life of a citizen, so you must pay the penalty for it. By the laws of Venice you will have to lose your wealth for this great offence. The State will get one half of it and the other half will go to Antonio.

Shylock could not say a word now. He was very unhappy and wanted to go. Antonio felt pity for him and said,” You can keep one half of your wealth. I don’t want it.” The Duck thanked the young lawyer and dismissed the court. Shylock left without thanking anybody.

Bassanio was very grateful to the young lawyer and wanted to pay him his fee. He did not know that the younger lawyer was his wife. Portia refused to accept any fee, but when Bassanio requested her again and again to accept something, she asked for the ring which she had given to him. Bassanio hesitated to give it, but Portia said she would not accept anything else and so he gave it to her. When she returned to her house, she showed it to Bassanio and then he knew that the clever young lawyer who had saved his dear friend’s life was lovely wife Portia.
