When the Shake Weight first came out and began to be advertised, a lot of people didn't know whether to laugh or take it seriously. The device looked a bit funny (not to mention obscene) and a gimmick, nothing more.

Well, gimmick or not, the device became so popular that a new version for males was made the Shake Weight For Men.

In this article I want to go over what this device does and whether or not you should use it to workout your arms, shoulders, and general upper body.

The Shake Weight for Men is basically the same product as the one for women only it's heavier at 5 lbs and should provide a more strenuous workout.

It is very easy to use: You hold it in one hand or both depending on which body part you wish to train and shake it over and over again. There are springs at either end of the dumbbell like device which make the weights bounce back and forth. This sends a pulse through your hands and into your muscles. At least, this is the theory.

The machine is based on something called Dynamic Inertia which states that you can get a more effective workout with it than with traditional weight training. I've even read a simulation study (provided by the Shake Weight For Men manufacturers) that showed how working out with the Shake Weights creates more muscle stimulation and should result in a bigger calorie expenditure.

There are some facts regarding the Shake Weight For Men:

1. The range of motion of the machine is very small as you hardly move it except to shake it. This may lead to a limited workout in comparison to regular weight training. Many trainers advocate long range of motion exercises and so it is unclear how Dynamic Inertia does.

2. There is some doubt as to how this device works. The commercial for the women's product states that it can help women tone their arms without creating bulky muscles. The commercial for the men's version seems to claim that it can produce these bulky muscles just fine. It seems a bit strange and I've not yet been able to find out how this can do one thing for women and another for men.

3. There are positive testimonials for this machine and the one for women as well so you should be aware of it.

Overall, this is a low cost product that may provide an additional element to your workout. However, I wouldn't use it as my only fitness equipment or refrain from doing traditional workouts.
