The “Big Bang Theory” is a comedy which stars four socially incompetent geniuses and their beautiful next-door neighbor Penny, who befriends them as the series progresses. This short review gives a synopsis of the characters and their traits, as well as a personal opinion of the show.
Dr. Leonard Hofstetter: Somewhat the main character of the series; although he’s not a social genius, he is likeable and probably the most ‘normal’ of the four. A short, curly-haired man, he makes a faithful friend and, later on, boyfriend.
Dr. Sheldon Cooper: Roommate of Leonard, and self-proclaimed member of a superior species. This tall theoretical physicist is completely at loss when it comes to any sort of social situation, despite his intelligence. This and his frequent self-compliments often lead to funny situations.
Howard Wolowitz: The only one of the group without a doctorate, Howard still lives with his crazy mother. He is Jewish, likes eating briskets, and has a very dirty mind.
Dr. Rajesh Koothrappali: Raj is the ‘Indian Boy’ of the group. His trademarks are his Indian accent, his self-pity (“I’m only a poor Indian boy”), and his unfortunate inability to talk to women.
Penny: The lively one, whose boyfriends come and go. She’s a typical pretty girl with little education and a dream of becoming a famous actress, which is not likely to ever come true. The exchange between her and the geniuses causes a lot of amusing misunderstandings.
Personally, I like the show very much. The jokes are actually funny, and I am always interested in what happens next, especially in the Leonard-Penny relationship. The characters develop somewhat as the show progresses, but still keep their own distinct personality. This makes it lifelike and easier to relate to. Also, they are very diverse, so that the comedy is relevant for many different people.
At first, the laughing in the background was somewhat irritating, however, you do get used to it.
