Saturnino Fabros, the MMDA traffic enforcer assaulted by Robert Carabuena did not expect to get all the public sympathy that poured in for him. He was very glad to finally be promoted into a Traffic Constable 2, after 27 years of service to the agency. And recently, as reported by Manila Bulletin, Metro Manila Development authority gave the model employee’s house a makeover.
The agency where Saturnino Fabros worked for many long years has finally taken notice and rewarded him. And it is for a good, albeit fortuitous reason. A widower and a father of 6 children, Saturnino Fabros has always worked hard, sticking to honest means and not letting poverty drive him into corrupt, disgusting acts. After his working hours as a traffic enforcer, he will go with his wife to scavenging for bits and pieces in the nearby Payatas dump site. Much of his honesty and hardwork may have gone unnoticed if not for the incident.
The Filipino people, long time victims of the scourge of corruption, has become skeptical of authorities, even traffic enforcers. The MMDA understands that they need to get the message across to the people: the majority of MMDA traffic enforcers would prefer their dignity over easy money; that hardwork and honesty are valued and rewarded in the organization.
The Philippines is a country raring to outgrow its murky history of greed and abuse in the hands of public officials. It is tired of people like Robert Blair Carabuena, who really have nothing to offer to society aside from the bragging rights of being born in a family that can afford the tuition fees.
Saturnino Fabros, with the way he handled himself in the situation and his life story, makes for a good role model to fellow employees. He would also pass as a fitting representative of MMDA in its efforts to once again gain the trust and respect of the people, and deserves every small gift he is getting.
