Religious Discrimination in the United States
For a country that was founded with the idea of Freedom of Religion and the right to worship freely; we sure have a lot of religious discrimination in the United States.
I'm a Christian and I don't try to hide the fact that I am. I love this country. But as I see Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists being discriminated against in an effort to keep the state "neutral", my blood just about reaches the boiling point. I can see where endorsing one religion over another would be wrong from the government's viewpoint. It would show favoritism if it did. In an effort to keep church and state separate the government is doing exactly what they set out not to do, favor one group over the rest. I'm tired of being discriminated against and if you belong to one of the major religions of this world you are being discriminated against, too.
Our country is allowing an extremely small percentage of our population to control what our school systems, judicial establishments, and general population can or cannot do in in regard to religion. In a country where it is supposed to be free to practice our religions it should be free to practice our religions. It should at least be fair, giving everybody an opportunity to express their views. In an effort to diminish religious displays from any particular group, all members of any organized religion are being discriminated against. There is one group, however, that is having its religion endorsed, the Atheists, those who believe that there is no God. A show of no display on the courthouse lawn is a show that endorses Atheism, no God, no display. I am a firm believer in Christianity and personally wish there was a nativity scene on every courthouse lawn during the Christmas season; but this would be unfair also. The Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus etc… should also have their Holidays represented, too, if desired. Or, why can't each group have a special time of year to display the symbols of their faiths? Instead, one of the smallest religious groups in our country controlling the entire country as to what will be displayed and what will not be displayed. This is discrimination.
The Atheist population in the United States, according to information found in the Encyclopedia Britannica through Wikipedia, is about 4%. A worldwide study of the population puts the number of Atheists at 2.3%. Of the 4% and the 2.3% only about half of them are strong Atheists. This would mean that in the United States about 2% of the people in the Atheist religion control the other 98% of the people in the US and what we can or cannot do as far as displays of our religion. According to statistics from 2009, almost 80% of this country claims an affiliation with a Christian religion, either Catholic or Protestant. I am offended by the fact that we are not allowed to show our support for God; but the Atheists are allowed to show their opposition to God by removing what we support. Although, Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus only made up about 2% of our population and Jews made up about 2%, these groups are also being discriminated against.
Its about time we speak up as a nation and demand our freedom to worship in this country as God leads us. No one church should govern the country; but all religions should have the right to express their beliefs. I thank God to live in the United States where I can still worship God in church. I just wish we could let God out of church and be freed from religious discrimination in the United States.
