We throw tons of recyclable materials in the garbage every year. Items that could be recycled and made useful. It’s not a lot of trouble to set aside receptacles to sort recyclables into. If you have a garden you can use food scraps to either start a compost pile or bury the scraps in your vegetable garden or among flowers and shrubs. The food will break down and make excellent fertilizer. You can also shred paper and bury it with scraps.

Buy recyclable material as much as possible. Avoid foam and try to buy only recyclable plastic. Buy returnable bottles and don’t forget to return them.

If you change your own oil, take the old oil into a gas station or garage to be recycled.

Recycle your batteries, Batteries contain dangerous waste material, never throw them in the trash and allow hazardous chemicals to enter the soil and water.

Buy products with the least amount of packaging. bulk products come with the least packaging are usually cheaper.

Reuse your plastic grocery bags. Bring your own shopping bag when you are marketing or reuse your old store bags. You can return them to some stores.

Save containers for reuse. Jars and bottles can be used for flower vases. Jars make good snack containers. Reuse padded envelopes.

Dispose of toxic materials properly. Paint, household cleaners, and other hazardous chemicals should never be thrown in the trash. Contact your local sanitation for information.

Never put paper in the trash. Use it as scrap to jot down notes, shred and bury in the garden or recycle.
