One in every four men in South Africa are rapists?
South Africa is a very beautiful country with big cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town that would leave a visitor marveled. But in the midst of all this beauty lies a very scary beast – sexual violence. The country is by and large notorious for having one of the highest levels of rape in the world.
According to a major study by the country’s Medical Research Council (MRC), one in four men in South Africa when questioned admitted to committing a crime of rape in their lives. Some also confessed to attacking and raping more than just one victim. Can you believe that? I was so stunned to hear that as I guess you are.
The research method used in getting these answers was a clever method which guaranteed nothing but the truth from men in South Africa since their anonymity would be protected. The Medical Research Center used a Palm Pilot device where all men had to do was just tap in their answers with a hundred percent guaranteed anonymity. This measure went a long way to bring forth frank or rather shocking answers if you asked me.
Out of the one in every four men who admitted to raping, about 75% of them confessed that they first committed rape while still in their teens. The very important study by the Medical Research Council also found out that 1 in every 20 men confessed to raping a female in the last year.
Professor Rachel Jewkes who led the research for the Medical Research Council said that South Africa has a very high prevalence rate of rape which she believes is based on what according to her is the gender hierarchy thing which is deeply imbedded in the country’s culture and also she blamed this shocking findings on the so called sexual entitlement of men in the country.
The study which was also funded by the British government found out that out of the number of men surveyed, 28% admitted to having raped a woman or girl. Three percent of the number surveyed said they had indulged in homosexuality rape, raping a fellow man or boy. And over 50% of the rapists said they had raped more than once.
The survey by the Medical Research Council (MRC) of South Africa has made the government of South Africa to sit up in its fight against sexual violence. The government has been repeatedly criticized for failing to curb this serious crisis.
