Physical inactivity can be defined as the state of being inactive. As human beings, we need to be active in order to remain healthy and fit. The World Health Organization (W.H.O) has identified physical inactive as one of the major leading causes of premature deaths worldwide most especially in advanced nations. The health effects of physical inactivity are alarming; therefore we need to pay more attention to the type of lifestyle we live these days.
Some of the effects physical Inactivity has contributed include diseases like, obesity, hypertension, heart (cardiovascular) disease, colon cancer, breast cancer and premature deaths. Research also suggests that lack of physical activity may lead to frequent tiredness (which is some how ridiculous) and can also lead to poor memory retention in children and even adults. Physical inactivity may also lead to poor performances at work places.
There are several causes of physical inactivity; however, I would write about only a few major ones. Here are some causes of physical inactivity:
Modernization and avoiding discomfort; which has rubbed us of some the physical active things our ancestors used to do, the invention of television and computers have deprived us from doing some active things that we would have otherwise been doing. For example the television has prevented some people from attending some social gatherings, programs and even sporting activities because they are being shown on television, they would rather sit at home and watch them. With so many programmers especially with the up surge in decoders and satellite dishes most people tend to sit home and watch instead of attending some social gatherings. With the invention of computers and internet certain physical activities have been cut off, for example the sending of letters through the mail box is gradually facing out, as E-mails are frequently used. The introduction of internet banking has cut the physical active work of going to the bank to make transfers from one account to another. What about elevators, which have prevented us from using stairways.
Medications, sicknesses and injuries; are some causes of physical inactivity. I would first of all start with medications; some drugs and toxins, like Ralozam, Alprux, Kalma and Alprazolam that we sometimes use prevents us from being physical active. Some sicknesses and injuries can make us inactive for long periods of time.
It is with no doubt that some of these physical inactive things can not be eliminated from our lifestyle, especially as technology advancement has up surged over the years. However, the only thing we can do is to mitigate the physical inactive activities or introduce some physical activities in our daily lifestyle. Some important ideas crossed my mind, they include:
1. A campaign to promote regular exercise
2. Promotion of school based physical activity
3. Creation and enhancement of physical activity centres in communities
4. Organizations should introduce some physical active activities, for example the promotion of the use of stairways instead of the use of elevators.
