Although older people can recall the terrible days of WW11 and more recently the results of what has become known as 'ethnic cleansing', nevertheless everyone is agreed that there has never been a time like this.
Today mankind is threatened on all fronts. Hunger is prevalent as never before, lawlessness walks our streets, global warming threatens everyone. The earth has been pillaged of much of its resources, some of which are essential to the wellbeing of the whole planet, such as the loss of rain forests. Many species have become extinct and others are on the brink of extinction.
As the media unfold horror stories daily our fears mount. What is going to happen? Are we nearing Armaggedon? Documentaries begin to appear that have a religious flavour about this, theories that would have been laughed at a few years ago are now being seriously considered.
For those who are young and have their lives ahead of them a growing unease has developed. Young people looking for jobs or freedom or meaning in their lives are taking to the streets. Anarchists who desire to exploit these genuine protestors do so with their faces covered and the resulting images of destruction add to the mayhem.
People are fearful that life will never be the same again, that peace and security have gone. Even religious people are asking 'How does a God of love sit by and let this happen?'
The Bible tells us that when we suffer God suffers with us, so we can conclude that the state of planet earth and mankind in particular is painful to Him as well. The good news is that things are going to get a whole lot better and that one day, hopefully soon, the promise of Jesus Christ will be fulfilled and and he will return and clean up the mess that we have created .
One day He’ll stop the suffering
And take away the pain,
He’ll wipe the tears from every eye
And make us smile again.
Today we live with war and want,
A world where conflict rules,
And those who say that ‘God is Love’
Are thrust aside as fools.
One day He’ll come with mighty power
And every war will cease,
His rule will cover all the world
And fill each land with peace.
Until that day we walk by faith
And trust through good and ill,
And pray that when His Kingdom comes
He’ll find us faithful still.
