Not many may know that Pakistan has large army with almost 700000 men under arms. Considering that Pakistan is one fifth of India in size, this army does appear disproportonate. It makes it the 7th largest army in the world. That is about all as comensurate with its size the performance of the army on the battlefield can only be termed poor.
During the days of the Raj the Muslim element of the British Indian army was credited as a good fighting force. The Punjab regiments from Muslim Punjab acquitted themselves with honor. But after independence and creatipn of the state of Pakistan, the army has gone to seed. In fact in every war with India the Pakistan army has been badly beaten. It must be the only army in the world that allowed Pakistan to break into two states with a colossal defeat in 1971. I am referring to the creation of Bangladesh.
Subsequently in open tank warfare in the West the Pak army despite advantage of terrain and armor was badly worsted. Another defeat was in 1998 when the Pak prime miniter had to hurry to Bill Clinton to arrange a cease fire.
The efficacy of this bloated force is again exposed as it failed to detect the US commando operation just 100 km from the Pak capital. The question arises as to why the Pakistan people are made to pay for this large force which has only a record of defeat. Why does Pakistan need this huge army? Would it not be better to have smaller and better trained force? It is for the Pak people to rise up and demand accountability. Till that happens, i am afraid there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
