It is about three years since I bought my Netbook P.C. At that time Tablets had not begun to invade the market. I was in the lookout for a portable machine which could boast of ultra portability, yet low price. A regular Laptop or Notebook was out of my reckoning because I knew it was not easy to carry one due to its weight (normally about 3 kg) and size (minimum screen size being some 14” or so). Then I came to read about the Netbook in an electronic magazine and immediately decided to buy one.

The Netbook I bought was Acer Aspire one, a cute, lovable machine. The processor is Intel Atom. It has a RAM of 1GB and an HDD of 160 GB. Three nos. of USB ports are provided and the screen size is 8.5 inches. A regular keyboard is there. No CD or DVD drive is provided. In order to connect it to the internet I bought a wireless internet modem. I used to take it to my office. During the lunch break, I used to surf the net using my Netbook. I had taken up the work on translation of a book at that time and my Netbook came very handy for that.

One day a fellow known to me came to my office. When he saw my Netbook he said,

“Why did you buy this? Nobody buys it now. It has lost its market already.”

“Well friend, what have you to say against it?” I asked him, a little irritated.

“The screen size is small and so, reading is not comfortable. No CD or DVD drive is available. The processor is not very strong. These are the main complaints. A regular laptop is better”

“OK, what if I don’t take these as disadvantages at all?”

He just looked at me inquiringly.

I continued, “It all matters only what you are looking for in it. I will tell you a story. One of my friends bought a new scooter. A friend of ours asked him, ‘Why did you buy a scooter? You could have bought a car instead’

“My friend replied, ‘I own a car already.’

‘Then why did you buy this scooter also. It is a waste of money.’

‘My dear friend, just understand that a car and a scooter have slightly different uses. A scooter comes very handy when you are traveling alone to the town in heavy traffic. A scooter can negotiate traffic blocks easily and finding a parking space will be easy too. Now you get it I think.’

“The Netbook and Laptop are also just like his scooter and car. I bought this Netbook for a special purpose. I gave maximum importance to its portability. It weighs just a kilo gram. And its size is also very small as the screen size is only 8.5 inches. So, it is very handy. Its Atom processor may not be as powerful as the processor in a Laptop. But who cares, I have only internet surfing and some word processing works to do and this processor is more than enough to perform that duty beautifully. I have also a regular Desktop computer at home. Now, I think you got it, my fool!”

My Netbook has become my best companion while traveling. It is loaded with Windows XP O.S. and works just like a regular Laptop. I use to type down my articles on it. A Netbook costs just half of what a Laptop costs and it is ultra portable too. You may say that the ultra book is here. That is true. But it costs twice as much as a Laptop and four times a Netbook. Apart from that, its size is also large, though the weight equals that of a Netbook. So, when it comes to portability, the Netbook gets full marks. That was what I was looking for. And I am very satisfied with my Netbook.

Good info on Net book. Indeed the blessings to modern generation.

Thank you Sujay, for the comment.

I brought a netbook last year. I was less than pleased when I got some malware on it after only being on it for less than an hour. Other than that, I like the netbook better than the laptop as it's more portable.

Thank you for adding your valuable comment.

With you having a netbook, I'm in good company.:-) I'm enjoying its portability myself. I've just installed it with Kingsoft Office where I draft my articles and Eset anti-virus. Great to carry around. Great column, my friend.

Thank you my friend. Hope you are having a good time with your new netbook.
