Mortal Kombat 9 Review

Many believed that once Midway went out of business and Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe was made that Mortal Kombat would never be back to normal with fatalities and gore like it used to have. Surprisingly a studio named NetherRealm formed together with the original Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon to make a new game that followed the old format.

Mortal Kombat 9 features all of the past character favorites such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero and fatalities and babalities were brought back. The game features a story mode that loosely follows the original Mortal Kombat tournament. The story consists of 16 chapters and in each chapter you control and fight in several battles as a different character.

There is still the original arcade ladder where you fight 7 different foes and then fight either Goro or Kintaro and then fight Shao Kahn to see your character's ending. The game has a new feature that can add more more replayability to the game. This is called Tag ladder. You are able to fight with 2 fighters against another 2 fighters in a tag team battle. Besides just tagging in and out normally you can also use combos as you tag in and out to get really high damage. This tag team mode adds something to play with up to 4 people.

Online in Mortal Kombat can be very fun if you know good combos and are skilled. There are many unbelievable fighters out there where you feel like you can't even move an inch while they are performing an insane combo on you but the game is pretty balanced out. Many people say the fighters are unbalanced but I believe they are balanced its just the fact that some fighters can be spammed more easily than others. Online used to be very laggy but this has been fixed and is no longer a problem.

Another part of the game is the Crypt. In the Crypt you can buy concept art and alternate character designs for Fighters. You get money by basically playing the game. Playing arcade ladder, performing fatalities, getting flawless victories. The Crypt is much more diverse in this Mortal Kombat as you walk around in 4 different sections to buy the items. The items are kept a mystery until you buy them. Also while in the Crypt I would have a little caution... you never know what might pop up on the screen. ;).

DLC has been brought to the game and is still being brought. This summer 4 DLC fighters are to come. Skarlet and Kenshi have already arrived and Rain is coming soon. There is still one more unannounced mystery character to come also. With each fighter comes a compatibility pack that is free that comes with 2 free classic costumes in case you are uninterested in buying the DLC characters. There is also a retro skins pack that contains the skins for popular characters from the first Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat 9 is a great move forward for the franchise and brought the game back to the roots that all the fans love. For this great game I give a 5 out of 5 stars!
