The author of Handbook On Writing a Novel, Eva Hanagan advices: What you choose to write and the manner in which you write are influenced by your own experience of life, your powers of observation, the cultural environment and even the landscape and climate in which you find yourself; the music to which you listen, the books and poetry you read and the pictures you look at. These are the stimuli which feed your imagination and not only influence your ideas but in addition, they generate the ideas themselves.
Alfred Harmsworth, who later became Lord Northcliffe gave this advice to his journalists: Never lose your sense of the superficial. It was Northcliffe who revolutionized the newspaper reading habits of the British public when in 1986, he launched a halfpenny morning newspaper, the Daily Mail. What Northcliffe termed superficial is better known today as human interest. It is a fact that there are far more readers for human interest material than there are for serious articles.
That fact should always be uppermost in the minds of would-be writers. If you write about what men and women are discussing in their daily lives you will have a larger audience for your work than if you write about something obscure or which is only of interest to a minority.
However, the beginner must start at the bottom of the ladder and gain experience before attempting to write about politics, international finance or other subjects that tend to be the prerogative of the specialists. It is far better at first for you to lower your sights to the seemingly mundane. There is more chance of success and you can still influence people by writing about what interests them. And if there is some subject about which you have a burning desire to write, then go ahead and write it.
At the time you have gained some experience and had some work published, you may well find it financially advantageous to specialize. This simply means writing frequently on a subject – perhaps a hobby, pastime or some special interest such as gardening, antiques etc. There are freelance writers who specialize in one or more subjects and it can be profitable than writing general interest material.

I write any subject that interests me under the merciless sun.
