Microsoft Security Essentials Download

For those of you who don't know, Microsoft created a free anti-virus software called "security essentials". It's available to windows xp, Vista and windows 7 users.

Access the download from http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/pc-security/mse.aspx. Once you arrive at the site, select your version, download the file and run it. After reading through the set up screen, click next, I accept and validate. When complete, click finish and run your first security scan. The options to scan a computer are quick, full, and custom.

Security essentials automatically updates itself after asking for confirmation. Just click the update button when it informs you it's out of date. When the software is green, you're protected. When it turns red, it requires an update, which it will prompt you for.

When the software picks up viruses from your PC, you'll be able to view those threats in the history tab and choose either to delete threats or keep them quarantined until further inspection. Find out more about the threat and where it might have come from by typing the name of the virus into Google search to see if it's listed anywhere on the internet. Discovering where or how you picked up a virus will help you prevent future occurrences. Viruses come from emails, downloads, phishing attacks and other sources.

The settings tab allows you to choose an automatic scan of your computer for any time and day of the week. You also have the option to limit CPU usage between 10% and 100% while it scans. Advanced settings allow you to create a restore point on your computer before taking any actions on the threats. The history tab shows you the viruses and problems it found and what actions you took, whether you allowed them to run, deleted, or left them in quarantine.
