People say that you will know how many friends you have by throwing a birthday party. I know I have a lot of friends and I don’t think I have to call out a party only to brag to everyone my ‘inventory’ of friends. Inventory in business by the way, is a nonearning asset, they’re idle. Besides, you can’t guarantee that all those who show in your party are really your friends. I have attended a lot of birthday parties of people I barely know. Friends do not just show up for a party. You can call and meet them anytime of the year, through celebration, through times they need you and through times you need them.

The day of birth is very special. It calls for something far more than just a party, where you can eat, drink and get wild. But I’m not against how other people celebrate their birthdays. That is not simply the picture of making my birthday special. Here are some of the productive ways to make your birthday meaningful:

1. Do something new. There must be something that you wish you could’ve done before. It could be a recipe you’ve always wanted to try or a musical instrument you’ve wanted to touch. It could be anything you thought you couldn’t find time to do because of your schedule. This is the perfect day to drop all the routines you have. Take a 1-day leave from work. If you have pressing matters, have it done in advance so you can spend your day worry-free. This is the day you should try everything you wanted out. Get messy! Do an experiment!

2. Pamper yourself. Taking a bath, brushing your teeth, eating and other related routines are regular things you do to pamper yourself. On this special day, you may stretch the routine a little further by spending a little longer than you normally do. You may also spend time at the mall strolling or playing at the arcade. Have yourself pampered through massage, foot spa and other relaxing activities. It’s a leisure that’s good for your health.

3. Reflect. Another year has passed. Still you have another year ahead of you. It’s a perfect day to reflect on things you have so far. What are the things that you have done so far? Were they good enough? What are the things you wish you could have done better? How are you going to do it next time? Are you contented of what you have now? Is your career going to the direction you’ve wanted? How are you going to improve yourself, your career, your relationship with your family and friends and your love life? You may come up with a strategic plan at the end of this day or as the days to come. What’s important is you have dived into your deeper senses to see and appreciate what you have and what still want to have in your life.
