Successful writers do not lounge around waiting for inspiration. They sit with pen, typewriter or word processor and they start writing. They write regularly because they have disciplined themselves to do so. This regular writing helps to keep the mind fresh, active and creative. Many writers find keeping a diary very helpful for this and it can have the added advantage of being a rich source of writing ideas when they look back through it.
When to write
One person may rise early and write for two or three hours before breakfast when he feels most mentally alert and creative. Another writes when most people are asleep. Others may do office hours, starting at 8:30 Am or 9:00 AM writing until 12:00 noon, an hour off for lunch, then two or three hours in the afternoon; writing perhaps, in the morning, typing in the afternoon, then taking the dog for a walk to post the completed work in the evening. Only you will know, due to your circumstances and mental make-up, when is the best time to do your creative writing. Work out the time most suitable for you and try to keep to it every day.
Just as you must decide for yourself when to write, you must also decide on how much to write at each session. This again depends on your personal make-up, preferences and the time you have available. Some writers prefer to work in short bursts, while others are better with more continuous stints.
Where to write
There are writers who are unable to work unless the environment is suitable, with no distractions. The desk must face a blank wall instead of the view from a window and there must be no interruptions from family or friends. On the other hand, some people believe that a writer should be able to write anywhere, oblivious to his surrounding and lost in his own creative world. Remember Tom Paine – he was a man who can write in the shadow of the guillotine. When he was in prison in Paris during the Reign of Terror, he did not let the threat of execution stop him writing. He went ahead and finished “The Age of Reason“.
We are all mentally different. If you are one of those people who can be creative while all around you the hurly-burly of the world goes on, then you are fortunate indeed. But if you are not so gifted, you should find a place to write where you are happy and comfortable. A place where you know your mental abilities can be released unrestricted. A situation that encourages you to write.
A danger to avoid
It is not a good idea to slog away day and night for a weekend and then take several weeks off to compensate for work done. This leads to mental slackness and poor creativity. That attitude is negative and unproductive. So-called writers with that outlook on the craft will write very little of publishable standard. Better results are achieved by regular daily production. Excellent fiction and non-fiction have been produced by writers who sat down and dredged up ideas.

My favorite Saying: “Dream big and don’t stop without giving it a chance to come true.” I am a father of 3 for 25 years, OFW for 17 years, a Blogger, sometimes a Poet, Self-motivated and Professional by experience. You can call me Paul or Pruel. I am friendly animal but can kick you off when it is needed. LOL. I have no specific areas where my writing will focus on. I write any subject that interests me under the merciless sun.
