While walking around the mall, I saw one stall that immediately got my attention. Dubai has everything for everyone but one stall looks like it has something really unique.

Planning to get involved in the 2013 Dubai Marathon, I am on the lookout for my next pair of running shoes. There, in the racks, are nicely arranged boxes of what looked more like a pair of thick socks than athletic shoes. Pictures are strategically placed in the stall, however, to inform passersby that they are running shoes indeed.

It did not hurt that the shoes looked cool, as we all have the tendency to consider the looks first and then the health benefits later. Perhaps, the designers from Leguano, as what the brand turns out to be, know about this pattern very well.

After having a look at the nice-looking shoes, there were leaflets that explain the benefits of running with Leguano shoes. Apparently, the uniqueness in design is a result of its unique purpose: to let every runner gain the advantages of barefoot running while protecting the feet from injury.

As the leaflet says, we are all designed for barefoot running. Our feet are made up of muscles, tendons and bones that are not supposed to be confined to ordinary running shoes. They are supposed to move freely so they can also share the burden and the stress will not be confined to a few major portions.

The unique design of Leguano shoes allows for movement like in barefoot running, leading to higher speed and stamina and injury-free and less free running. What is easily noticeable with Leguano shoes is the absence of raised heels. The sole also has a studded texture that massages the foot with every step. Designed to fit nicely like socks, the shoes looks and really feels light. Sold for 289 UAE Dirhams, it is also does not sound too heavy in the pocket.

There may be other similar products out there, but I know what to look for in my next search for running shoes: the one that brings me closest to barefoot running.

I've ran before in the past, about a few years ago but I had difficulty as my shines began to hurt after just 2 weeks so I had to discontinue my runs. Little did I know it was only because I was running incorrectly by landing on my heels instead of the ball to mid foot. So now I usually run "bare-foot" but with socks so prevent skin damage, I suppose. But I have heard about these feet shoes, and I was advised to pick some up. Now my consideration for purchasing some have gone up. Thanks for sharing your shoe experience column.
