This guide is for players who just started playing League of Legends. If you haven't downloaded the game's client and don't know a thing about the game, then please take a look at my League of Legends review.

Basic starting tips(At this moment i assume you have already played through the tutorial part of the game.)

  • There are always 10 free unlocked heroes changing weekly which you can use. I suggest playing with these instead of spending influence points at the beginning. In other words, don't spend your hard earned influence points until you feel comfortable with the game.
  • Cooperative mode(playing against computer controlled champions) is a good way to learn the basics.
  • Select Intermediate level in Cooperative mode. Well the obvious question is why would a newbie select Intermediate level when there is a Beginner level? The answer is that most newbies will select beginner level and they are more likely to quit, afk, feed during the game making beginner level harder than intermediate level with decent players. Also note that after reaching level 10 with your summoner you will get some penalties(gain less influence points, experience) if you play on beginner level.
  • Playing with friends with voice communication can help a lot, especially if they are already used to this game.

Gameplay tips

  • Communication is important: At start the team has to decide fast who will use the top/mid/bottom lanes. On low level or against bots it's sufficient to use the 2/1/2 strategy which means two champions each on top and bottom lanes and one on the mid lane. However, on higher level(ranked games for example) one of the champions from the top will be a jungler and will farm the jungle. This setup gives faster levelling for the top champions.
  • Last Hits: Last hits or killing blows are very important in League of Legends. The champion who successfully land a killing blow on a minion will be rewarded with gold. Attacking minions with low health is a preffered tactic.
  • Laning tactics: When you move down a lane to gain experience and gold, sooner or later you will meet opposing champion(s). The aim here is that to be the last one who has to teleport back to regenerate health and mana. The more you can stay in battle, the more experience and gold you will gain which gives an obvious advantage. Stay behind minions and try to deal damage to enemy champions to force them back to the summoner pool to regenerate health.
  • Don't overextend: Be careful with your movement in enemy territory. After you pushed back your opponents on the lane and passed the half of the map, ambushes from the jungle will become more easy and frequent. Take care when attacking turrets, that's is a perfect situation for a jungler to attempt killing you. Good communication between lanes can help a lot.
  • Don't be shy to fall back: There are some situation when you should fall back from fights. For example if your teammate teleported back and left you against two champions. It's better to go back and keep the synch between you and your teammate. After fully regenerated you can push back the opposing champions with the help of your teammate.
  • Kill the Dragon or Baron Nashor: Each player will get significant amount of experience if you kill any of these two neutral monsters. The Baron also gives buff to attacking abilities. Please note that these creatures are very strong and should be killed with the help of teammates after mid game.
  • Buying Items: Don't forget to check the shop for better items when you teleport back to regenerate health and mana.
