Many people first became aware of the Law of Attraction in 2006 with the release of The Secret film and best-selling self-help book written by Australian, Rhonda Byrne. The Secret reveals that the universe is governed by a natural law called The Law of Attraction, and the overall principle of the Law of Attraction is based on the concept that ‘like attracts like’; that positive or negative things manifest in your life according to your positive or negative thoughts and feelings:- You attract whatever you think and feel!
To elaborate a little more: - Every piece of existence is a form of energy, which is arranged in a specific way through the vibration and density of energy particles. And through these energy particles, matter is created. Examples of this are steam, water and ice. So, depending on the arrangement, vibration and density, energy becomes matter in many different forms. Now, here’s the connection with the Law of Attraction; ‘thought’ is considered to be - energy!
According to The Secret, positive thoughts and positive feelings create life-changing results; increased wealth, health and happiness, while negative thoughts and negative feelings attract – negative results! The Secret book reached the top of the New York Times best-seller list, where it remained for 146 consecutive weeks, and continues to frequently appear there. There is no secret that The Secret received a great deal of criticism due to the claims that it gave false hope and only served to line the pockets of those that promoted it. However it was a book which made many people start to – think!
In writing The Secret, the author Rhonda Bryne, was largely influenced by The Science of Getting Rich (1910), written by Wallace D Wattles (1860–1911). Wattles was a ‘New Thought’ American author, who studied the writings of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegal and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He recommended the study of their books to his readers who wished to understand what he characterized as ‘the monistic theory of the cosmos’. Wattles claimed to have discovered the truth of New Thought principles and put them into practice himself.
Napoleon Hill (1883 - 1970) was another American author who became known as one of the earliest successful producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature. His most famous book, Think and Grow Rich (1937), is one of the best-selling books of all time, selling over 20 million copies at the time of his death in 1970. Hill became an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 – 1936. One of Hill’s most famous quotes is: - ‘What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve’.
Hill’s greatest influence in writing Think and Grow Rich was through the bidding of Scottish-American industrialist, businessman and entrepreneur, Andrew Carnegie(1835 – 1919). Carnegie led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century, and was known as one of the most important philanthropists of his era. One of the most powerful men of that time, Carnegie strongly encouraged Hill to further study, interview and write about the characteristics of the most well-known achievers that Hill had mentioned in his earlier book, The Law of Success.
In more modern times, The Secret book, and the teachings of Abraham (Esther Hicks) are two very popular forms of learning about The Law of Attraction. However, while The Secret is proposed by many to focus detrimentally on material gain, the focus of the ‘sometimes very controversial’ teachings of Abraham is on understanding The Law of Attraction to benefit every facet of life. Esther Hicks is an American inspirational speaker and best-selling author, who presents workshops and has extended literature and audio downloads on the Law of Attraction.
There are many other examples of the teachings of The Law of Attraction available, which may not always be clearly labelled as such. The above examples are those that I have found helpful, continue to study, and share quotes from. Understanding and following The Law of Attraction fully is rarely a ‘quick’ transition for most; although there are many (and not only the famous and wealthy) that have succeeded. For true wealth should not be measured in monetary terms, but in the amount of joy – felt within!
I leave you with the quote: – ‘nothing changes – if nothing changes’!
