Internet Revolution Risks

All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness.”

Necessity is the mother of all inventions they say. In the last centur,y this need has really played a huge role in carving out the lifestyle we all are used to now. With the passing of every decade, the inventors kept churning out inventions after inventions to cater to the ever growing need, the’ Necessity of comfort’. As with all things, there are two sides to the coin. Every invention has been a boon in solving an issue but there has always been the other aspect that has worked out to our disadvantage.

If there is any invention that has affected mankind at a drastic pace then I would say it is the Internet. This originally defense network has in time created a fusion of all the inventions and made it available for us on the move.

It has changed the way we communicate, the way we watch movies, the way we seek information and to stretch it a bit even the way we locate ourselves on our planet. This plethora of computer network has no limit and probably more of its potential still remains to be tapped.

With the advent of the internet age comes a very dark side as well. Information, so freely available can be dangerous in the wrong hands. So much of personal data is floating around and no one knows for sure who is accessing what and who know how much. It has become much easier for the genius criminal mind to use this network to milk sitting ducks unaware of the ‘Information Phishing’ happening on their computer. With such easy accessibility, children are exposed to information, which 20 years ago they would have had to reach a certain age to get exposed to. With email. although a great tool for communication, somewhere it has made us lose the personal touch, a hand written letter brings about. Communication is so easy that we have started to take them for granted and have lost the excitement of being in touch with dear and near ones separated by long distance.

Face book, has become one of those necessary fads and there are so many of us just devoting most of our time being on this site. I have no clue how people can be so hooked on to such things. This only shows how bored we are with our monotonous life and cling on to anything that comes up as a fad. The irony about all this is that when we are asked to spend time doing something nice or being with family or doing something creative, people have the standard excuse “Who’s got the time to do all that”. However to log in to face book and spending hours doing ‘Absolutely nothing productive’ and Of course putting their current status like “I am happy” “I am feeling depressed” “I am going for a movie” and the list goes on. Its like everyone out there is eager to know when your are feeling what. I think there is such an identity crisis and people probably feel this is one way of seeking attention. They haven’t the slightest of idea that the information that they so happily provide and those personal photographs that they display for the whole world to see. Although many might say that “I don’t share it to the whole world but just to my friends”. They are oblivious of the fact that all those information are freely published on the internet and there is someone who knows how to get to those information. It won’t be a surprise if a total stranger who follows such geeks on facebook would in time have enough information to actually impersonate as a very close friend of yours or even impersonate that individual himself. Teenage and school kids are also hooked on to this and it is very important for parents to keep a tab on this activity. However as technology will have it, there are a thousand ways for people to get connected to the internet, if not from home then from somewhere else and this really has made it difficult for parents to keep a check on their children’s activities.

With the email revolution, it has become easy for people to communicate. Then someone realized the potential of this mass advertising network and the world of spam began. There is no escaping this and it has become part and parcel of using the internet.

We are so depended on keeping our personal data on the computer that any set back to our computer could possibly lead to losing all our data, if the backups are not in place. And internet can be one major cause of this set back. This is an easy ‘Door of opportunity’ for the virus manufacturers to test their sadistic technological prowess.

The internet revolution to my mind has been the ultimate in terms of how it has changed our way of life. However as with all things in nature, unless we as individuals do not strike a right balance on its usage this boon can easily become a bane with unprecedented personal or financial losses.
