Improving employee satisfaction does not cost a lot of money.

After all, when the boss is caring, and pays at market rate, many employees are happy to work for him. They will not leave the company even when a competitor offers a higher salary.

What are the ways for improving employee satisfaction at work with low cost?

1. Flexible timing

There is absolutely no reason why the company must start work at 9 am and not 8 am or 10 am.

If a company offers flexible timing, the employees can factor in their most productive hours and their family obligation.

It is unreasonable to ask an employee to start work at 7 am when he has to send the kids to school.

Flexible timing is one of the best ways for improving employee satisfaction, since it does not incur cost for implementation.

2. Fun

Having fun at work does not mean forking out a big sum of money for corporate bonding course.

You can have fun at work by celebrating the birthday of the employee.

You can have fun at work by redecorating the office.

Working and having fun are not mutually exclusive activity. It does not cost money for people to enjoy themselves.

3. Thank you

Many bosses find it hard to say thank you, even when they appreciate the effort of the employees.

It is good to say thank you, and to say it in public.

When you need to counsel an employee for poor work performance, do it in private. However, when you want to praise someone, praise it openly.

4. Grooming employees for bigger roles

If your star performers do not see a future in the company, they will leave.

They want job satisfaction as well as challenges in the workplace. They need to show that they can do better, and they want recognition and support from the bosses.

It is good to groom the employees for bigger roles.

Some of the methods include bringing one employee to management meetings each time, and allow them to take minutes.

At the end of the meeting, go for a lunch to discuss about it. The employee will feel honored as well as curious about how senior managers think.

He will ask why a certain department head is so against the idea. He is not in the position to understand the power struggle, and the desire of the department head to defend his department or the interest of the department.

This is a free way to broaden the outlook of the employees, and groom them for managerial roles.
