Idiopathic scoliosis in young children and teenagers
Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine. What has caused the curvature to occur is not known. So it is called idiopathic Scoliosis. It is hereditary disorder.
Idiopathic scoliosis commonly be found in young children between 10 to15 years of age.
Yearly scoliosis screening in school is must . Adam’s bend test reveals this deformation. It effect both male and female children. But progression of the curve is more in females from 10 years to puberty. It does not cause permanent problems or disabilities if detected early and treated.With curves over 40 surgical correction is must.Less than that bracing is done.
If left untreated the gap between chest and lungs will be reduced causing respiratory and cardiac problems
Symptoms of scoliosis
- A hump or uneven appearance in the rib cage
- One hip more prominent than the other.
- Shoulders at different heights.
- The body tilts to one side
- The waist appears uneven
- The body tilts to one side
