A good and careful reading is the first step towards writing a good essay. Reading facilitates two most important, basic processes in essay writing. These processes are: to know and understand others’ points of view and to know how to express and present these points of view in limited words, in the best possible manner.
First event to take note of here is that it is by reading that one is introduced to the points of view of others on a particular subject matter. For example, when you read this article, then only you are able to know what I want to say about the relation between reading and essay writing. Thus, more you read (more written matter by various authors) more you gather the points of view of others, which will give you the opportunity to build your write up/essay. By extensive and careful reading, you get to know what has been said and what remains to be said on a particular subject matter, what are the authors’ points of view and whether they go well with you line of thought or not, and whether they are completely personal, written with the thought of very limited circulation, or are presented for the acceptance by a large number of readers. Thus, careful reading gives you the ability to develop some thoughts, on a particular subject matter, and powers the circulation of these thoughts in your mind. For further explanation, you may read Aristotle’s and Plato’s points of view that have marked difference on the basics of the Western philosophy.
Second, reading exposes the author’s way of expressing the thoughts on a particular subject matter. The way/method/ style of expression varies from person to person and therefore, there is a huge variety of styles in literature, especially in essay writing. Once you know and understand lots of writing styles, then only you will be able to adopt and master one writing style that suits you, or develop yet another/new writing style and thus add value to the pre-existing writing styles.
Therefore, it can be said that reading is the first stepping stone of essay writing.
