Affiliate marketing is all around us whether we are aware of it or not. Every website from the national newspapers to the personal blog of the man who lives down the road will probably contain links to a different website or to a product in order to gain the webmaster an income. Affiliate marketing is the backbone of the internet yet mostly goes unnoticed by the average visitor.
Monetising your website is fairly simple in terms of the processes involved but in truth the fact remains that 90% of affiliate marketers will earn less than $100 in each month. Now for a blogger who is just looking for a little extra money that $100 will be a fantastic little sideline but for anyone serious about making a living from the internet it's not so good.
Many people think of affiliate marketing as a get rich quick scheme, they believe that placing a few random banners on a website will get them a decent income but to make a decent amount of money through affiliates there are several concepts you need to grasp.
The dream we all strive for is having a great residual income and having the choice each morning whether we are going to do some work or whether we'll sit by our swimming pool and relax. However, it is simply a dream and whilst it is possible to achieve such a luxurious lifestyle through affiliate marketing it is very hard work and not only requires a steep learning curve but in the early days requires hours upon hours of dedicated work.
For this reason it is inadvisable to assume that your journey into affiliate marketing will provide you with a good income with very little work. That is unless of course you have a lot of knowledge in the following subjects.
1. Building websites that will convert into traffic and sales
2. Understanding SEO (Search engine optimization).
3. Understanding your target audience and tailoring affiliate links to them.
4. Learning how to promote your website to gain high number of targeted traffic
Even the most affluent affiliate marketers will tell you that this learning process is essential to being successful and maintaining a good work ethic is the only way to keep going. If you are good at researching a subject, if you can put that knowledge into practice and if you are willing to make mistakes early on then you have a good chance of being a success. How long this will take will depend on a number of things but based on the premise that your affiliate marketing business will be a part time sideline to your main job it could take you years before you are able to financially support yourself just from affiliate marketing.
If you think that affiliate marketing is for you then you need to remember that the first few months will be the hardest. Don't expect to earn very much in this time period and try not to be disheartened by your poor progress. Everyone has to begin somewhere and if you are willing to put in the hours your hard work will eventually pay off. The first time you log into one of your affiliate accounts and see something next to your earnings it will make you suddenly realise that perhaps you are doing the right thing. Just keep at it and those cents will soon turn into dollars.

You have mentioned some good points. But, what the industry standards these...
