We all know that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. What causes your every action? There is a desire behind your every action. What is a desire? Is it good or bad for you? Buddha says that desire is the cause of all worldly sorrows. ‘Get rid of the desires’ says ‘The Bhagavad Gita’. Should we live without desires? Is it really possible to live without any desires? Living without desire itself is another kind of desire, isn’t it? So, what exactly the Buddha and Bhagavad Gita meant when they said to get rid of desires? Please keep reading…..
What exactly is desire? When we fall short of something, we want to have it more. It’s a kind of yearning for certain things. For example, when you feel some emptiness in your stomach, you feel hungry and you desire for food. When there is an emptiness or incompleteness, you get a desire. You desire to own a decent house, a good car, a happy family etc. When you can’t get what you desire for, worry pops into your head. You get angry with whatever or whoever that obstructs you from getting what you desired to have. On the other hand if you get what you desired, you either want it more or new desires are born. You will long for a more sophisticated car, a better job, a new woman etc.
Should we live without desires? No, it’s not the point. We can have desires, nothing wrong in that. The point is we should have reasonable and limited desires. You get happiness only when one or more of your desires get fulfilled. Let us assume you have 100 desires and get 50 of them fulfilled. You are happy and unhappy. Let us imagine you have only 10 desires and get 8 of them fulfilled you are a more satisfied and happy person, isn’t it? You can have good desires. You may want to own a Mercedes Benz and work hard to get it, it’s absolutely fine. You should never think that you should alone own a Mercedes. Moreover, you should not be obsessed with your Mercedes. Of course, you can enjoy the ride in your Mercedes fully. At the same time you should always be equally happy to ride in an ordinary car when there is need to ride in it. That’s what the Bhagavad Gita says about the art of living.
Summary: Behind every action, there is a desire. Behind every desire, there is an emptiness or incompleteness. It’s not wrong to have good desires in life. However, desires should be as limited as possible so that they don’t agitate our mind and affect our happiness. We should never be obsessed with our desires and the comforts we enjoy from our fulfilled desires. Instead, we can focus on the higher things like spiritual upliftment and self-realization. That’s the art of living. Thanks for reading.
