My computer's internet speed and overall performance has been poor for the past few weeks, almost crawling to a near stand still. Downloading anything was extremely slow and struggling to do pretty much anything. With that and CPU running at 100% all the time, it indicated serious problems for my computer. After many safe-mode start-ups, ending processes one by one in task manager, removing nearly all programs I ever downloaded and performing deep scans using up to date anti-malware security from a popular ISP provider(that showed nothing) I decided to do some research online to find free tools with top reviews, which would not only increase my computers internet speed, but also clean my PC from any infections and trojans it might have picked up.

The free tools I found online performed amazingly well and I would like to share with you what took over 200 viruses/infection, eight trojans and over 11GB of copied files, history, cookies and images from my PC. It's running like new thanks to these free tools.

Emsisoft Anti-Malware Freeware

I think my ISP(Internet service provider) is one of the most popular. However, after the resent problems I have some doubts with the security and its effectiveness at stopping threats to my PC online and while browsing. I found no such problems using Emsisoft Anti-Malware. Emsisoft Anti-Malware is multiple-award winning duel scan engine. In fact, this free malware scanner removed over 200 viruses/infections and eight Trojans from my computer and helped to increase internet speed. Emsisoft is free for a full 30 days, you can extend this by asking your friends to download it(using a link they give you within the program, after downloading).

Emsisoft Anti-Malware scans computer's for infections of viruses, Trojans, Rootkits, Worms, Bots and Spyware. Currently, there are four different scans to choose from. Quick scan; scans all active programs and spyware traces. Smart scan; scans the same programs as the quick scan, plus programs and windows files. Deep scan; all files on all hard drives scanned. If you're having serious problems with viruses and infections, start your computer in safe-mode, disconnect from the internet and run a deep scan. Secunia online software inspector(OSI) checks your computer for any weaknesses. It finds insecure versions of programs installed on your PC. Secunia assists you in updating and protecting your PC and activates more security features in Java. No installation or download needed because it runs through your browser.

Start by going to Secunia.com and click on the "Scan Online with the Secunia OSI" link on the top-right of the page. Select your language and click the "Start Scanner" to begin. Scans takes no longer than 5-40 seconds to complete a full inspection of your computer. You can chooser a more thorough inspection of your operating system by ticking the box under the start button(mine took 4 minutes.)

Find Files and Folders quicker

Search With Everything and Delete Duplicates

It is difficult to find files and folders you need when a computer's hard disk fills up. Windows includes a search facility that works pretty well, but it's nowhere near as fast as Everything-the free program that will search your hard disk in the blink of an eye.

Start by visiting voidtools.com and find the latest download link at the bottom of the page(Everything-1.2.1.371.exe when I downloaded it) Everything is a small installation that only takes seconds to download.

Once launched the program window shows a blank page. Look at the bottom left and you will see a status message indicating that it's scanning. The tool is lightening-fast so even scanning a large drive takes just a few seconds. After the download and run, it showed me over 204,209 items on my PC.

Search for Anything

This tool is advanced tool to say the least. I typed in .tif | .bmp into the search box and it searched for all pictures that stored as TIFF and BMP files. This technique of searching helped me to remove 10GB of duplicate files that had been converted from one format into another. To organize search results into their respective file types, right-click on an empty space on the column names(Size,path, etc)and choose type from the pop-up listings.

If you can't find a particular file stored on your computer, but remember the name of it, type the name into the search box(in any order)and everything will track it down. Everything can also find files by type as well. For example, finding pictures stored on your computer in the jpg format, type in jpg and everything will find and list all jpg images on the disk. If you're clearing out pictures, results can be sorted by size, so listing the largest first will be useful when freeing up disk space.

No need to Launch Everything each time you need it

Everything is available from inside windows browser, so you don't need to launch it every time you need to use it to search. Right-click on any folder and choose search everything from the pop-up menu. Everything will load and display the full contents of any folder, sub folders and files.

CCleaner

Windows and Applications Cleaner

Another excellent free tool with a small, fast download to get started straight away. CCleaner cleans all areas of your computer. It removed over 1.8GB of mess from my machine and only took a couple of minutes to complete the scan and removal. Cleans out what other tools cannot find and definitely contributes with improving internet speed. To start, head over to Piriform.com/ccleaner. CCleaner cleans up temporary files, history, cookies, Auto complete form history, index.dat, Download history and recently typed url's. CCleaner also has a registry cleaner to remove unused and old registry entries.
