Some of us work in the same capacity for ten years without getting a job promotion.
We observe others who join just a year or two get promoted.
We wonder what have we done wrong, since we are good at our work, yet we are not promoted.
How to get promoted?
1. Take initiative
It is not enough to do our work well.
If we do our job well, we are already adequately paid for our effort.
If you want to get promoted, you must show the ability to take on a higher level job.
That means when your supervisor goes on leave, you can offer to cover her duties. Do not shy away from this task.
Do not say that it is not your job. If you tell the manager this, your manager will think that you do not want a job promotion at all.
At the moment, supervisory duties are not your job. However, if you want a job promotion, supervisory duties will be your job.
That is why always offer to cover duties for your boss. You are showing that you can take on a higher duty work.
2. Provide answers
You need to provide answers and not complaints.
When you face problems at work, and you know your colleagues face the same problems, you can start to brainstorm the solutions.
You know that your manager does not know about the problems, since they are not hands on in daily operation.
It is good to highlight the problems. However, ensure that you have the solution as well.
3. Know your boss and her boss
While it is important to get along with your boss, you need to get along with her boss too.
Your boss is not the person to approve your promotion. Your boss can recommend a job promotion for you. However, the person who has the power to promote you is her boss.
In some companies, the head of department and the head of Human Resource Department are the two persons who matter.
In this case, it makes sense for you to get to know them.
If your head of department and the head of Human Resource Department appreciate people who help out in annual events of the company, make sure you volunteer for all the events.
Even if you hate to serve coffee in a big gathering, you must learn to make yourself visible.
How to get promoted? Doing your job well is not enough. Make sure you exceed the job expectation.
